I'd go directly from the source (cable box, I guess in your case) to the surround sound system. Skip the TV step. Use the HDMI for video only essentially.

I tried to run the component video and the RCA audio to the cable box from the surround sound system and I couldn't find the video signal, but I had an audio signal.

ETA: No comprende "HDMI for video only". I thought HDMI's meaning in life was to carry audio and video together.

I agree. I generally like my "regular" steaks still mooing or walked slowly through a warm kitchen but I prefer a prime rib rare to medium rare.

I haven't tried ordering rare at a good steakhouse yet. The last time I was at Morton's I got the cajun ribeye medium rare, and I'm usually a strip/medium rare orderer. I had carpaccio for the first time in AMS and I enjoyed it, but I couldn't imagine eating steakhouse beef any less done than rare.

Chances of all my dive gear being fully dry when it comes time to pack up in 3 hours: 5%

Chances of my wanting to vomit when I open the bag in 96 hours upon arrival back in NYC: 100%

I'm not looking forward to this at all. :(

Is it your intention to used the surround speakers 100% of the time? If that's the case then you don't need any audio input to the TV. You don't have to hook it up.

If you want to listen to the cable TV on the HT some of the time, and the rest on the TV speakers, then there would be some other changes (I'd have to check). What kind of TV do you have?

Surround speakers at all times is what my mother wants achieved, yes. I disagree, but my vote means nothing.

The TV is a 52" Mitsubishi DLP, WD-52631.

That change must be made in the cable box which you must be able to see in order to make the change. With the both HDMI cable and component cables running from the cable box to the TV, go into the cable box menu and switch the video output from HDMI to component. Then switch source on your TV to the component input.

After that is accomplished, ensure the cable box audio settings are correct in not trying to send audio over the HDMI cable. If the sound is unfunky, there is a high chance the TV is foobaring the whole shebang.
