There are a lot of amazing things about Israel. None of the mainstream parties have enough of a following to be able to form a government without at least some of the super-religious parties joining the coalition. In an effort to not look completely dumb, the Israelis said that they changed the name out of deference to both Jews and Muslims. I still fail to see how calling it the swine flu is in any way improper or insulting, no matter what your religious persuasion. Calling it the Mexican flu when it's occurred in plenty of other places in the past is, however, definitely an insult to Mexico.

When I heard that the Israeli government is calling it the Mexican Flu and not the swine flu, I almost threw up. The Israeli government is kowtowing to the small, but boisterous right wing religious fanatics, that control only a small portion of the government. When I visit Israel, I try and stay away from the religious areas.

I'm confused, those keeping Kosher don't eat pork so why would 'swine' offend them?

I assume maybe something about if you catch the flu, it implies you were in contact with the swine. Which would be a violation of keeping Kosher...I guess. I really dont know

Since the current chief of the WHO is from Hong Kong, her most important agenda should be to change the name of the 1968 flu pandemic to something other than "Hong Kong flu".

And nobody should call athlete's foot "Hong Kong foot" either. So insulting.

I don't mind question as it does mean they were paying attention enough to come up with a question especially engineers who are extremely introverted. This one guy is one of those old far% who gets all agitated when they hear about something different than the way they've always done.

May be it's to help send the message to those who are Kosher that they can actually catch the flu and that pigs have nothing to do with it right now.

Some countries are calling it North American Flu now.

(Great Post)

I don't understand why it's so difficult to call it by its 'strain' name: H1N1. Oh, right, it's not as media friendly.

So, wait, why can't we just call it H1N1?

I like your thought, so my next dumb question ;) is then why would they be offended that it is called the Swine flu? To change the name to raise awareness I understand, but change the name because it is offensive I still am lost.

North American Flu hmmm, has a nice ring to it. Does it come with McDonalds and Flat screen?
