My parents both received an opup from DUB-EWR this morning. It seems like this is becoming the norm for a lot of the 752 flights to/from Europe. I think it makes sense for CO to do if they are having such a tough time selling seats in the front cabin.

sdm1130: the Tigers/Red Wings jet you cited was not a DC-9, and it isn't their plane anymore. They kept the tail number and transferred it from the BAC-111 shown in the shot to a DC-9. Corrected I stand on the 752 - but Dallas does have one, that I've seen.

CO was selling L fares on my flight 10 days before the trip, and it was basically already full in the back. Knowing that they can just OpUp and that they are not going to sell the J seat it makes sense to snag every last cent, I suppose. Plus happy elites with OpUps doesn't really hurt them too much.
I've been seeing this same behavior on UA as well, works out great for me. :) |

Anyways, in a way CO is lucky to have so much TATL capacity with 752s that are 16/159 (9% J) We've already heard about the 20-30% drop in premium traffic from BA and other airlines. In contrast, some BA's 777s are like 14/48/40/149 (i.e. 25% F/J). Even some of DL's 763 are 35/181 (16% J). |
Once my lower back comes back on line after this week's coughing, I feel like being stupid again and doing a MR. I need 15,036/2=7518 EQM or close to it for Gold. I do expect to go to MCI in Oct. so that's a possible deduct. (I know, go all the way to Plat.)

Watch the GA and when you see a smile on their face (yeah I know it's EWR and that's hard to find LOL) approach then and tell them that you understand that they are full in the back and were wondering if they were going to OPUP with Elites. Then smile and tell them you are an Elite and what a wonder thing they are going to do (try doing this without gaging) and then say that you are off to buy a coffee or soda and ask if they want one, while they do thing OPUP thing. Yeah it's all about the smoozing. |

This is an area that you have to be really careful with. Most GAs hate being asked for a free upgrade just because. We hear every excuse in the book as to why you are sitting in Y but want F: it's our honeymoon, it's my birthday, it's my whatever......

Yeah it's all about the smoozing. Man! I thought I was the only one that bought gate agents coffee. :D I had a nice chat with the captain once when traveling CGN-EWR while he was waiting for his plane to arrive at the gate. I kept my fingers crossed- turned out no room up front but got all the wine I wanted (in a real glass) on the return. The flight attendent said compliments of the captain :) By the way I am sitting on the beach in Wailea, Maui (gorgeous day) searching prices to see if I can return or go somewhere else before June 15. My wife said, "put the computer away geek!" she's right! :o |

The other half is insistent in her want of a labradoodle or a goldendoodle...better that than pressure for a child of the human variety, I guess. |
