Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I am sitting in the bulkhead seat with eight feet of legroom.

That's one of the worse seats on the train. Bicycles, overflowing luggage and some people sit on the floor in that area because they are affraid someone is going to walk off with their stuff that they have stored on the floor. Me I sit where the ride is the best and that's towards the middle of the car.

I figure that there are many ways to "play" AM. I thought I would do something interesting like what you describe when I started. But at the end, I decide to compete with the others. And that means flying 737s & 757s. :o
