Morning, Box.

I do my best ;) Those NW routes are a pain! Good thing it's only 1 euro at a time. And I think we finally reached the floor on that. We both finally have 100% utilization for the first time in a while...

Could you imagine if The Box made it into TalkMail?

Please advise in advance as to when this is happening. Couples communication theory is something I'm gaining an interest in.

I'm thrilled that I'm on the other side of this. I have a mindreader. :D

I hope it never comes to that - TalkMail would ruin The Box.

Really? I guess so, but the competition/margin really isn't too far to move. And I think that baseball is actually a smarter game to understand. If you don't believe, read Money Ball by Michael Lewis and then we can talk again.

Baseball is the only sport where the defense controls the ball.

George Will had a lot of interesting things to say about baseball in Ken Burns' documentary.

George Plimton said the smaller the ball, the better the literature.

Personally, I think that Abner Doubleday was secretly a Zen aficionado.

It will be interesting to see what a long trip will do to our relationship. Will we speak? Text each other? PM? We do still write old fashioned notes to each other. At least we've kept that.

Me, I just like the level of privacy afforded by the internet.

I agree with the TV part of this. I'm not 100% convinced on the "best" part. A well played game is well played regardless of the sport. My wife insists that there is no strategy in basketball, for example. And I've seen enough to know that 90% of the pro games are guys just going through the motions. But when you get the ones who are there to play - it happens more often in college ball - you really can get an enjoyable experience. Football is a bit harder for me to appreciate from that perspective and I rarely appreciate baseball for that, though every now and then I am rewarded with a nice nap.

The younger guys have to care because if they don't they never get paid the big bucks. It is the pros who tend to slack more, IMO.

I've never read a golf book, but I actually think the trend might end at baseball. But I have an explanation for that one. Baseball was always the best gig a sportswriter could get. They got a summer of vacations across the country and the widest readership in the industry. Football writers got to visit the iron belt and upper midwest in the winter. Similar for basketball. So the guys who were the best writers were the ones who ended up getting the baseball beat. I'm not sure it holds completely anymore - I haven't decided if I like Lupica's writing, for example - but it seems to hold pretty solidly.

The only exception I know of was in college where the HOckey beat was considered the top one. ;)

Some of the best, or perhaps that with the most heart, baseball games I've seen were Single A games in north Jesery.

Baseball is a 19th-century pastoral game. Football is a 20th-century technological struggle.

This from the guy who wrote a groundbreaking football book?

There is still enough of a backwoods type work ethic in hockey that keeps the intensity up more often that in the other pro sports. I will however admit that the weight of the money belts carried around the waists of hockey players, though generally lighter than those of other major leaguers, does tend to slow them down more than it did in the old days.

Speaking of money belts (the NCAA), what do you say at halftime if you're Tom Izzo? I would be simply apoplectic.

Ideally nothing - a Michigan State loss and I pull down my pool.

I don't know what they did to the memo - I simply want CBS to cut away to a competitive game.

Anyone watching the NCAA basketball finals tonight? That game is ridiculous. Michigan State is getting their donkey handed to them all over the court.
