Looks like I'll be buying seasons of TV on iTunes instead of DVD. I wonder if my existing DVD seasons can find their way over to iPod somehow...or do I have copy-protection issues?

It really depends on the DVDs. You can use HandBrake to rip the DVDs to your computer and I think it will even do iPod versions.

Handbrake will help them find their way over. I will not comment on the legalities of such activities.

Correct. It has presets that will take care of setting an iPod friendly resolution, bitrate, encoding type, etc. Nice little (free!) program.

The Fair Use stuff makes it legal as long as they are his DVDs. The same applies to CDs that you back up.

Thanks fellas. Looking at it right now. And re: legalities - I believe it was Oliver Wendell Holmes, or maybe Clarence Darrow, who famously said about their iPods, "Legalities schmegalities." :D

Yes and yes. My fiancee doesn't have any TV on DVD, so everything is self-owned.

For DVDs, doesn't the DMCA say otherwise? In some cases, ripping a DVD requires circumventing/cracking the copy protection which, under the DMCA, is illegal.

This of course does not apply to CDs as they do not normally contain any copy protection.

I'd rather have 1A than almost any other A seat, other than 12A. In 1A there's nobody reclining back into you. The problems with that seat are no storage, it's about half an inch narrower than the other seats, and it gets very loud and cold up there. But I'd still rather sit there than most of the other A seats because of the lack of a seat in front of you.

What's everybody doing tonight?

We're going to see Doubt and then go out to dinner. Nothing fancy. This is the 2nd year in a row we have been home for New Years Eve as for the 8 before that we were always traveling some where nice. Oh well.

Also: Movie Review....The MUST SEE movie is Slum Dog Millionaire. It is one of the top 5 pictures I have ever seen.

Pass on The Day the Earth Stood Still and rent the original. Original much much better.

18 year old son refuses to watch the original as he says "Its black and white and lousy special effects, why should I see it"? My reply, acting, directing, story, etc etc etc....

Yeah, I thought that the DMCA was making moves to require DVD makers to remove copyright protection.

There was a case recently where the legal questions behind circumventing copy protection were kind of answered. I'll look up the case and post it.

Friend's house down the street. I'm bringing Smirnoff Ice for the better half and a bottle of Goose for me. ^

Tonight's plans are Flying CO, of course.

And also trying to figure out why they would block 5 F seats on a 1300 mile domestic 753 run. If Mrs. Mudder (who am I kidding, I mean me) is sitting in the back because LK and a 4 person entourage needs to fly tonight, not gonna be pleased.

The original The Day the Earth Stood Still is my all time favorite movie.
I would like to see the new one but your review makes me wonder if I should just want to rent it. If you have not seen the original is the new one worth spending the money to see in the theator, just for the special effects?
