I may just sleep on teh aeroport seating/floor for my first trip. Arrive near midnight, AS flight departs at 06:00. Not really any point to getting a cheap room for 4 hours.

If it is June, "cheap room" in Alaska is not easy to find.

Ja. What I would consider doing if it were me is looking for cheap originating flights in PHL, but book the WN shorthaul that times to it. Then, you're building :-:A miles, but also earning RR's. Sooner or later teh free ticket on WN magically appears.

GEG was the bane of my existence in this case. WN usually wants $300ish to go there, with a connection is LAS. Last I checked, CO was twice that. I still want to get there.

Have you looked at B fares to HKG? I don't know if they are still out there, but people were reporting $1,500-ish from lots of places to HKG. 8065 miles on EWR-HKG, doubled for R/T and add 50% plus positioning gets you past Silver and sniffing at Gold.

Sadly, yes. And it only is useful for published fares, not available fares, so be prepared for the occasional :rolleyes: as you search.

I got a window seat at the "office" today. Sitting at the local coffee shop for breakfast and a bit of work, watching the city (st)roll by on 8th avenue. Doesn't suck.

BRW would be the choice for a day air trip but the fares appear to be frightening. FAI is of some interest even in the summer (in the winter there are the great dog races). There is a bit of scenery, a cow-townish downtown, and a restaurant at, IIRC, the Springhill Suites with a pretty good wine list.

And just sitting down and chatting with some locals is usually quite entertaining and enlightening about the locality and the attitudes.

Most of the show boats are Seattle-based in teh offseason. I haven't watched in a while, but IIRC the only boat that is registered in AK is Time Bandit. Northwestern is SEA for sure, and they come home right around tax time.

ETA: Nope, Cornelia Marie is registered in Kodiak. Found the list on teh Wiki.

I researched when we went to SEA last year. We were hoping to be in town on homecoming weekend. We were about six weeks early.

Teh Wizard (the boat, not the man/myth/legend) is also SEA-based. Wiki has a photo of Wiz and Northwestern docked side by side.
