There are lots of pipes running right under the roof in many older NY high rises and mid rises. Don't forget, water for the top floors is stored in a tank on the roof and it needs to get down somehow.

There were no digital cameras or camera phones at that time, although I did have to bring multiple types of fish back to prove competence (had to catch multiple types of fish for the badge). The massive carp I landed was the largest fresh-water fish I've ever pulled. The smallest was I pulled in that day were a few dozen bluegill, who would bite on a rock if you could make it float.
