I learned to write well at my (private) secondary school. Not, incidentally, at my (Ivy League) university. (And then it was after that, in graduate school, where I discovered how little one could take that skill for granted in other people.) It's one of the two or three reasons why I have no doubt that that education was well worth it.

Evening,Box.

What a  weekend. the weather was horrible. My town was really badly hit. We had dozens of really large trees fall all over town, roads were blocked, power cables down, houses badly damaged by falling trees, flooded roads. You name it, we had it.

Sadly, we woke up this morning to a flooded basement. All was OK last night when we went to bed. Sump pump was working. Some time during the night, the sump pump gave up the ghost. We had about 8" of water in teh basement this morning. All the stuff we had stored down there is sopping wet. Probably ruined. Apparently the insurance doesn't cover "personal property" that is damaged by water, only the damage to the physical property itself. Sucks big time. We had so much stuff stored in the basement here while waiting for the Lake House to be finished. :(

I am SO SORRY to hear that. :( My office-mate is dealing with the same thing from this past weekend - it truly sounds wretched.

No love from UA's E-fares this week. :(

Old planes, higher cost structure, etc. We thought about going to SJD, since we had a bridal show freebie to use there: CO/IAH: $350, UA/US via ORD and/or (yeah, double connect) PHX: $685.

I'm sure that the MSY issue has something to do with fare buckets and the fact that one can fly PHL-HOU-MSY on WN if one is so inclined. There's no reason why DL would be that much more, particularly since they still have a lot of service between PHL and ATL.

If you're making a connection on a refundable fare, connecting through a city where WN flies can lower the fare enormously. When I take a red-eye home from California, I usually fly on UA through ORD; since the fare prices out as XXX-ORD and ORD-PHL, the total fare is less than XXX-PHL non-stop (because WN flies XXX-MDW and MDW-PHL).

Briefly going back to the hated words discussion, I forgot to mention the small group of adverbs that do nothing to help one's argument in a written piece. "Officially", "actually", "literally" - these words need to jump off a cliff. Quickly.

Exit row is best for Y, but I still end up getting a numb butt after a few hours. :-:

Do most, if not all, online brokerages lump the cost of the trade in as a loss in your portfolio? I'm still getting the hang of this and I find it annoying that costs of acquisition are not broken out separately from the performance of the stocks themselves.

I slept through a 4.2 in the Anaheim area when I was about 10 years old. My mother woke up and told me there was an earthquake and I didn't believe her.

Thanks Brituchenite!! The slouching is for next week. I still haven't heard back from ExJet about an interview. May need to double check with them today.

I haven't noticed if Scottrade and Schwab do this, but it would make sense since your commissions are a loss. Additionally, your buy and sell commissions are subtracted (or added) when figuring your capital gains (or loss) for tax purposes.

Don't know if they 'all' do this -- but it is to help the client -- in terms of tax loss calculations! It is more 'realistic' to include transaction costs in the overall gain/loss tracking!;) GL!^

Same fault as the World Series quake?

DL had those as well and called it "Sky Deli." I remember a number of DL flights I took on IAH-ATL in 2000 and 2001 that offered those. In 2000 and early 2001, DL was still serving meals like a chef salad with ham, cheese, and a boiled egg in domestic Y on routes like ATL-BOS. However, I remember flying ATL-BOS in late 2001, and it was the Sky Deli bag, before DL completely abandoned meals in domestic Y on most routes.

I remember those on DL too, I think even as far back as maybe '98 or '99. At the time I remember thinking it was kind of , grabbing your lunch as you got on the plane. Who knew it was a harbinger?

Especially when "literally" is used as the exact opposite of its meaning, like when someone says, "My jaw 'literally' dropped to the ground". No, it didn't.

My partner has an iPhone, which he's planning to dump late this year and probably replace with the new Windows Phone 7 (still hate that name) or something on Android. Most of my friends have iPhones. I'm on Android and BlackBerry, and I have a growing group of friends using Android. I don't know anyone anymore who is using a Windows Mobile device.
