I will be in PDX & then off to STL -- that weekend!;)

Thanks for the update!^ It really sounds like an intriguing adventure to attend, though!;)

Feel better, soon!^

I had been in the "student loans and car payments don't mix well with hard-core savings" mindset, but even a little is better than nothing, right...

Agree!^

Another way to look at it -- is 'pay yourself, first'!^

All this talk of investing reminds me that I need to reallocate my 401(k) now that I finally got it rolled over and out of my old company. It was pretty well distributed before but the rollover moved it all to cash in the IRA. Now I have to find funds to put it in again. I hate this part.

Emphasis mine. Poor rabbi, stuck at the "other folks" table. (I think we did the same at our wedding; I can't remember who got the rabbi.)

+1

This is a key insight of behavioral economics, I think (the same logic that shows that participation in 401(k) plans is higher if people have to opt out rather than opt in).

Wow, I must be particularly obtuse this morning. I'm just not seeing a "Forum Tools" menu on the forum home page. I selected "Forum Home" from the Forums menu at the top nav bar. Am I in the right place?

Click on 'Continental OnePass' (this forum) & then you'll get all the threads in this forum -- with the 'forum tools' in the dark blue bar -- to the right (under 'private messages').^

I looks like it's doing what it should be doing, i.e. not thread should be marked read unless it was actually read. And if you're the type that wants a clean slate, that option is there. ^ Now to see how it works across different machines. I had an issue where if I would read FT on another computer my read posts would be unread

RE: sweetheart table
Well, put me in the pro camp. We had it and enjoyed it. A wedding is a balance of two things, IMO, family and friends celebrating your nuptials, and the kick off of a married couples life. We mingled a lot and I liked that when went to our table we had a bit of downtime to focus on each other instead or more mingling. Maybe you're better minglers, I dunno. I liked it. :-:

OK, thanks I WAS in the wrong place. However, I'm still not seeing some of my threads on the "My FT" page, I have to go to the "Subscribed Threads" page, not a big deal, just have to get used to going somewhere else.

Even if you're not sitting there I think having it is standoffish. I also believe that beginning a married life in isolation is a bad thing. Yes, you need alone time, but you're part of a community/society/whatever and choosing isolation at that point seems strange to me.

It is supposed to do this better since the read/unread data is saved in the DB rather than a cookie.

Yes, for sure. In the last year, I've gone to a multiple-checking-account model that has worked REALLY well. All fixed-cost things (car payment, gym, IRA, phone, etc.) are drawn out of the main account, which I never touch, and then I have a separate "allowance" account into which I transfer a set amount twice monthly, after each paycheck - that's for variable things like gas, food, entertainment, travel, etc. And then any extra income (gigs, tax returns, etc.) goes into that latter account and is just gravy. So I don't need to worry about keeping whatever minimum balance in the account to know that everything is taken care of. Additional investment/savings would just be another thing handled by the "bills" account (just making the free-spending-allowance transfers smaller).

Oh, yeah. People will do the default, whatever said default is.

Hahaha - it's true, if you were looking for words to describe me, "super mingler" would probably be near the top. I have to be reminded sometimes that "hanging out at home can actually be 'plans,' as opposed to just the lack thereof"... :p

We had a Box survey of Myers-Briggs types a few months ago, IIRC. I'm about 90% E.

Yeah, I hear ya -- it'll just take a bit to get used to! It was scary, at first to see how many threads I had posted to! (I have subsequently deleted a bunch of the ones that show up on the first page!)

It is true.
