The KL MD11 just arrived at PTY.
|
At 350 over the Chesapeake Bay on my way into the sun (I hope). For a while I thought that we were going MX with a nose gear problem that was taking nearly an hour. But they did fix it and JFK sprung us in about 5 minutes after we pushed back. Where was everybody?

What's with Costas and his shirts?

Nice to see the USA get silver in the nordic combined. Never had a medal in that sport.^

Rum & Ginger fail at the PTY PC. The guy poured it correctly and then dumped it out because he thought I ordered rum & coke. So he poured one of those instead, finishing the bottle of rum. I didn't feel like sitting around explaining it while he got a new bottle out so I'm just drinking the coke. The caffeine probably isn't a bad thing for me, either, at this point.

And the PTY PC WiFi is whacked; DHCP isn't working. So I'm tethered. Anyone know what to expect for a cab ride out of MEX tonight in terms of costs for about a 5 mile trip? Is it metered or negotiated? I can stay at the HH at the airport for $175a/i or at a Whndham for $95a/i. Plus the Wyndham is in town somewhere so there's a chance I get something cultural out of it, in addition to the 5,000 miles. I'm just not sure I want to deal with that at midnight. Cab rides from the MEX airport are prepaid. There's several providers from the airport, and they all show a cost of $172 MXP to the Wyndham Polanco. To prepay the cab, you stop by their counter at the airport - past immigrations and customs and ask for a specific zone. The Wyndam's address shows as Colonia Anzures which is in Zone 5. It should take you about 20-25 mins to get to the hotel late at night. To get back to the airport, you could arrange it through the hotel. I will frequently make my own reservation with the airport cabs - they tend to have the best knowledge of the traffic situation to the airport and I don't worry about safety. If you chose to do this, one of the companies is Sitio 300 -- their phone number is 5571-9344 (local #s in Mexico City are 8 digits long). If you don't speak Spanish, this works too -- speak in English to the person who answers the phone and they'll transfer you to an English speaking reservations agent. Tip: I usually tell them I prefer a cab with a radio to ensure they have the latest traffic info. BTW, when are you heading back to PTY? |
I e-mail NBC asking them to end the West Coast tape delay. Do you think they will?

But, if they do, I hope you'll use your powers to get them to grant int'l access too :D |

Unlikely :( since they probably do it to maximize viewers and advertising spend. It's really sad how the Olympic coverage increasingly gets limited to max revenues (e.g., if you are traveling, online coverage is geography-limited to respect the rights of other broadcasters)
