Once upon a time a lieutenant sat at the O-Club bar at EDDF. The older man sitting next to him, with an unmistakable RAF look about him, asked him his business. It was, tomorrow, to navigate an old airplane, whose new home would be the Arizona desert, across the Atlantic, via BIKF and Loring. The older man smiled thinly and said, "Let's see how true you speak. What's the mag deviation at John O' Groats?"

The young man felt a little panic; he'd know by 0900 tomorrow, but he didn't know today; he was lucky to remember where that place was. But he knew his job, and he knew the globe. He knew it was zero at the Mississippi River, and almost so where he sat, and west to Baffin in between. "I don't remember", he said, "but that's almost 60N, so the pole is only 20 north and over 90 west from there. Would you like me to guess?"

The older man signaled the bartender for another beer, one for the lt. "Not necessary. Some men might have such things memorized, and some men might try to bluff by changing the subject or challenging the question. But a journeyman knows how to make do with what has." With that, he swung off his stool, moving towards the flight attendants that had come over after their flight to FRA.

correction,

I little constructive criticism on why you were not welcomed more genially.

First, with your FT handle. It comes across as though you are the teacher and we are the students; very authoritarian, and that turns people off.

Second, your first post tells us how you are going to correct us, without giving us any credentials. If you would have said "I'm a recently retired airline mechanic/aviation engineer/pilot/etc., and I'd like to help you folks with technical issues," you would have probably had a ten-page thread within a matter of days because we all have technical questions.

Do I have technical questions? Heck, yeah. Will I ask them of someone I don't know that hasn't given me reason to believe them? No way.

Please try changing your FT handle, and coming back with a little less pomposity (is that even a word.) I'm sure you will learn a lot from us, and we will learn a lot from you.

What no one has come right out and said is "He may be a fraud."

Correction wrote, in reply to very good technical questions posed to him by another poster, the following drivel: [text omitted]

Now, let's just look at this for a moment. Is there one piece of information -- any information at all -- that the seasoned frequent-flyer doesn't already know? Or, more precisely, is there any information in Correction's post that the seasoned FT'er couldn't find out with minimal searching on these hallowed threads?

Face it: Correction punted [text omitted].

In other words, his superior technical knowledge is certainly not on display in ANY post Correction had made. There has been far more detailed, insightful technical knowledge coming from the seasoned FT posters, and I'm sure I'll continue to look to them for such knowledge.

Correction, after setting yourself up, you failed to measure up. When put to task on questions (which you asked for), you failed to deliver. We welcome one and all here, and we welcome you, too! But certainly, being gracious, polite, supportive, and affirming is just as important as being "right." I guess I'm just not sure I want such "Correction" of my thinking.

Another attorney I work with is "difficult." But he's so brilliant, and I learn so much from him, and he takes such good care of my clients in my absence...that he's worth it! And, I know he actually does care for all of us! Correction, however, has not earned that. Is he worth the "difficult" part because he is so giften, and deep down he really has a terrific heart? Hmmm...not in evidence on THIS record.

I say he's a phony. But Im happy to be proven wrong and will gladly retract if so.

Come on, guys/girls. I KNOW some of you must agree with me. Channa? Umguy? Where are you?
Thanks, LawFlyer. I think that coming out and calling someone a fraud would be a TOS violation -- it's better to let him make the case by himself.

Better tell that to the FAA, NTSB, Boeing, Airbus etc. etc. .

I guess that makes this post a correction correction.

Correction, you are a moron

Your high and mighty, holier than thou attitude uncovers the fact that you must be from Oklahoma.

I welcome a little controversy.

My thoughts exactly. We on this board should be better at recognizing silliness when we see it.

By the way, I saw a 727 with winglets taking off from DEN Wednesday.

I saw it while we were taxiing. Maybe DHL?

I wonder if there's anyone out there with the technical savvy to confirm that there are 727s with winglets.

After correction got hammered, no one wants to come off looking like a hoax now. Ok, here's several examples of 727s with winglets:
