PAPER TICKETS!
Well, boys and girls,
Part of the EUA mystery upgrade automatics have been deciphered. I talked to a Platinum Elite agent tonight and we discussed CO's blatant discrimination against JAWS. After about 10 minutes, the agent told me that he had a lot of calls for upgrades by people who should have been upgraded, but were not. The Key: All the pax that this agent had talked to regarding EUA, and no upgrade e-mails, had PAPER TICKETS! I happen to have a paper ticket for the second time this year and it has 2 CO and 1 NWA segment on it. The first segment I called on Sunday before my early Monday departure, I got upgraded. The NWA segment was upgraded at the ticket counter. And, the final CO segment on 11/10/00, was upgraded by the GREAT Elite agent that I talked to.
CO realizes that they have a few bugs in the EUA System. In fact, the agent that I talked to is reporting this to the proper person in Houston.

Unfortuantely my IAH-BOS was E-ticket and I am not complaining about not being upgraded because I am just a mere Silver, but I don't know if I would have been upgraded if I'd called.

Just completed PHX-LAX-HNL-GUM-TPE. PHX-LAX was upgraded at the airport, as it was an HP flight. Paper ticket. No segment was automatically upgraded. Called Elite line for manual. Agent apologized for the lack of an automated upgrade. She upgrade the LAX-HNL segment to BusinessFirst (!) and said that HNL-GUM was sold out in J. I asked about GUM-TPE and she said that she couldn't ugrade this, as it was an international segment. Funny, GUM-TPE is eligible for an upgrade while LAX-HNL and HNL-GUM are not.
Upon check in at LAX, the ticket agent told me that the telephone agent made a mistake and that she was going to downgrade me to coach. After some argument, I agreed to pay for the upgrade with $$$. The agent offered to call and get a mileage upgrade for me (how nice of her :j ), but I stuck with the cash option. I asked about the TPE-GUM segment and was told that it was NOT eligible, as the front cabin was sold as C. I informed her she was mistaken and showed her the printed rule. She declined to upgrade me. I decided to move on, as I don't want any more nasty notes in my PNR.
Upon arrival at the President's Club, I asked for the upgrade and was told there was no inventory (ha- C had 9 on ITN and D/Z had 9). OK, I'll call the elite line. I called the elite line and was told that if EUA doesn't upgrade you, you are out of luck. I informed the agent that I was at the airport and I wanted her to set the record straight that this segment was eligible. She replied that she has no idea what is and isn't eligible. She informed me that only the computer knows what is eligible and I must not be eligible, or else the computer would have upgraded me. I asked again at the gate and at the HNL PClub without success. Finally, the agent at the GUM PClub upgraded the segment.
For the record, the BFirst upgrade to HNL was NOT worth it. The seat was great, but the service was terrible and the food left a great deal to be desired. Air Mike was great up front to TPE.
If you are still reading this, I'll tell you about my preboarding attempt at HNL. I was in coach for HNL-GUM and was preboarding with my elite card. I was carrying on a small roll-aboard which fits in the small DC-10 overhead and a small attache which goes beneath the seat. The agent told me that I had no choice but to check my roll-aboard. I was not happy. I pleaded with her to let me take it on (I had no checked luggage). Upon arrival in TPE, no bag. I found out that my bag was sent to Manilla. So here it is, already late on 11/9 and I am wearing the same clothes as on 11/7! I can't wait for the laundry to arrive that I sent out this AM (I spent TWD $1,700 for the essentials, a nice shirt, and pants). The agent has no idea when my luggage will arrive. Hopefully it will get here before CO's next flight arrives in TPE from GUM (this Saturday at 10:30PM).
CO has done a good job of pissing me off on this trip. I guess they want me to join the ranks of the disgruntled. NJDavid, I think I'm ready to jump onboard with you.

I have a Saturday flight, with an e-ticket, that has not been upgraded as of 11am ET today, and two different phone agents have refused to upgrade me. They said I should wait for the EUA to run. And ITN shows F9 right now. I'm on hold, waiting for a third agent. After this one I start screaming.

Kitty Hawk, PLEASE use this opportunity to be the test case. Call 1-800 wecare2 and tell them as a CO elite you are following the procedure as detailed in your 2000 elite guide as provided to you by Continental One Pass at the beginning of the year. As you have received no updated or changed manual, and the one pass website still shows this manual and it's procedures as the current Elite Members Guide, DEMAND THAT THEY HONOR THEIR POSTED RULES AND PROCEDURES AND GIVE YOU THE UPGRADE!!!!!!
Let us know how it turns out.

David,
Up until now, I was willing to wait and see what happened with this system, and except for complaining that I hadn't got any notice of the new system, I have pretty much stayed out of the debate. Well, I am now firmly and solidly on the "this sucks and I hate it" side.
The third agent told me the same thing the first two had. I called 1-800-WECARE2, determined to be calm and reasonable, but to get what I am entitled to (and this is the first time I have ever used the word "entitled" when discussing an upgrade). I told the woman who answered my status, and explained that I was confused about this new system I'd heard about from my friends, because I had never gotten any notice about it from Continental. She checked, and said they do have my email address on file (which I already know) and she didn't know why I hadn't been informed. She then went away for some minutes. When she came back, she told me that I would be upgraded tonight when the EUA runs --she didn't call it that, though-- and I did not have to call back. I asked her how I would know I was upgraded, if I wasn't going to call back. Remember, as far as she knows, I don't know anything about this system so I don't know about email notification of upgrades. She never mentioned that I should get an email notification, and instead said I would be issued a first class boarding pass when I check in Saturday night. We went back and forth on this issue several times--me repeating variations of "you mean I have no way to know if I'm upgraded until I check in?" and she firmly denying that there was any chance I wouldn't be upgraded. She never really explained anything to me, and politely and firmly refused to manually upgrade me.
NOW I AM REALLY, REALLY ANGRY.
Under the old system, I would have been upgraded already (I assure you I was awake at midnight last night), I wouldn't have wasted now over two hours of my time (at my office), and I wouldn't be REALLY, REALLY ANGRY.
As soon as I post this, I am writing a letter, with details including names and times. This is an unconscionable waste of my time--MUCH worse than the calling at midnight routine ever was.

>> Just curious, what is the PNR?
Its the computerized passenger record. I believe it stands for "Passenger Name Record."

What am I missing here?
You itenerary contains NO automatically upgradeable segments, right? Elite upgrades do not apply to international flights (including Hawaii) nor to HP flights, so EAU should never have been searching for an upgrade for you? Or have I missed something here?

IMHO this thread has more unconnected themes, plots and sub-plots than "War and Peace" (ie flyers getting comp BF upgrades between LAX and HNL, posters "DEMANDING" their/others rights, etc etc). Lost baggage is never fun, but on the HNL-GUM flight passengers are often restricted to one carry-on. Your choice. Call the nice folks at WE CARE. Yesterday I did and a $300 CO travel voucher is (hopefully) on its way for a CO screw-up.
