taking flight Jul 9, 2009 8:02 pm

Mr. taking flight and I will be on the IB flight from IAD where we actually get some sleep before joining the party plane from MAD to BCN on Oct. 30th. We are leaving on Sunday, November 1 to spend a week in Spain, from BCN to Granada to Madrid. We would be interested in joining the group from BCN to Andorra on Friday and back to BCN on Sunday.

Something weird is going on with IB6764 MAD-BCN. It just can't be booked right now. It shows up on orbitz, expedia, but then disappears when you try to book it. I've been working with AA and they can't book it either. I believe IB has 2 flight #s for that flight, one used for international connections(IB6764) and one for local traffic(IB1146). What's strange is that I can't even book a simple one way under IB1146. I can get on the party plane JFK-MAD, but I might have to fly all alone onto BCN on a different flight. I'm so sad.

JFK-BCN prices out at over $2000 when you use that MAD-BCN segment...

There is a flight that lands at 13:55, perhaps get a ticket for that flight and try to standby for an earlier flight?

It's odd that you can't buy a ticket on that segment on Iberia.. on AA.com you can buy that segment... IB 1146 for $269 one way in coach and $319 in business... really expensive for a one hour flight..

You might also want to give AA a call, perhaps you can redeem some miles on that flight?

Will the confirmed list be updated this weekend?

I will be coming, but I'm on a RTW and don't want to officially confirm until I come back towards the end of Aug.

Are you sure that:

i) IB1146 is the same flight as IB6764, and not just two different flights flying at the same time (it's not like MAD-BCN is a thin route)?

and

ii) local traffic is allowed on that flight?

You can't just mix international pax with domestic ones- even the terminals are different...

I don't really know much about IB (or AA, for that matter) but I have a couple of guesses:
  1. A number of European airlines are trimming down their schedules, and maybe that flight has been cut (there are many others on MAD-BCN, it seems, all the 1x46 numbers except 1146).
  2. I think it's only an A320 (or something similar), so maybe the flight's already fully booked; what with all the FTers coming off the AA JFK flight and going to BooDoo VI, plus the hordes of Castillians starting off their weekend trip to Barcelona (in order to improve their Catalan language skills (:D)).
But don't despair, folks: there are loads of low-cost carriers that do that run! Just remember that, particularly in Europe, r/t fares (normally with a minium stay of 5-7 days) are much cheaper than one-way fares - just throw away the return ticket if you don't want it!

Thanks for the replies. Who knows what's going on. Those two flights may indeed be different flights, one accepting international pax only. The only odd thing is that the "local" IB1146 which appears on Iberia's timetable as operating on the 30th is not available for purchase at iberia.com. It does appear on aa.com, but when you go to actually purchase it is says fare or flight is no longer available.

But no worries. I'll probably be sick of you guys after 7 hours on the JFK-MAD leg so maybe a few hours apart will be necessary! ;) And there's a 3:30pm bus to Andorra that I will be able to make, even if I'm stuck on a later MAD-BCN flight.

IB operates both scheduled and shuttle ("Puente Aéreo") flights BCN-MAD. They fly 88 times/day. Don't worry, you'll get to BCN. :)

I'm now officially confirmed on the party plane JFK-MAD and then on the 1:45pm to BCN. Not ideal, but I'll just go standby on the earlier flight with y'all.

Oct. 29th better hurry up and get here.

alanw has stated that the Monday is a holiday in Europe. We intend to stay for the Monday tour and are planning now as to how to get back to BCN for a Tuesday AM flight home.

I do see the lovely bus schedule but does anybody know for sure that this schedule applies on a holiday? I have been in Europe on Monday holidays where nothing moves, nothing runs, and there is little or no public transportation available.

Same here. I plan to be at some prepaid Acor hotel at BCN airport on Monday evening, leaving for JFK on Tuesday morning.

I'm expecting a holiday limited bus schedule, but something moving. Anybody who knows anything, please advise.

No worries...the holiday is Nov. 1st, and as it is a sunday, it won't be different from the usual sundays (and in Andorra that means all shops open!)

Hey alanw, I believe somewhere I read that parking at the hotel might be free. Is that still the case?
