Assuming I get my steak in front of me by 8 and the
"ate the big one" shirt by 9, I'm in: got a 10:45 flight
bound for Charlotte. It will be good to see people (a
few old friends; mostly new faces to me).

Cheers
Michael

My plans are pretty solid, minus the actual plane ticket. Put me down as a definite.

I will find out this week which October weekend I will have family obligations to attend. If I make it, I will be flying LAS-DEN, DEN-PHX, PHX-DEN, DEN-LAS for DYMTWTU for 2460 EQM + 2460 1P Bonus + 8000 minumum DYMTWTU RDM bonus = 12920 RDM to get to the DO and back. It is a wee bit difficult to get much more than that on 255 mile direct flight

The rule stipulates the most miles flown, FWIW. One should not have a leg up in this silly little door prize simply because they have status on an airline. This way the playing field is level. ^

Friday: Dinner around 6:00pm at a Tempe/ MIll Ave. location to be finalized. I have a couple options in the works.

Following that:

Poetry Slam at Mills End Coffee House, 310 S. Mill Ave. in Tempe. Performances begins at 8pm. Free; just order coffee.
http://norazpoets.org/index.php?mod...lendar&calendar[view]=day&month=10&year=2006&day=13
Located a 3 block walk from Macayos.

Following the Poetry Slam, folks have access to dozens of stores, restaurants, bars, and movie theaters in the immediate area within walking distance.

-------------------------------------------------

SATURDAY options:

Fly a Space Shuttle mission-- $17.50 on Saturday 10:30am or 1pm in Peoria (NW suburb of Phoneix, about a 30 min. drive from the airport.) Lasts 2 hours. Reservations required; details at http://www.azchallenger.org/public.missions.htm and http://www.azchallenger.org/calendar.htm

--------------------------

Arizona Living History Rendezvous
Saturday 10am to 4pm

Free

Recreation of historical Arizona through period interpreters dressed and acting various roles. Sounds like a really interesting event!! Takes place at the Arizona Historical Society Museum at Papago Park, 1300 North College Ave. in Tempe. Located 3 miles from the airport and 1 1/2 miles from the Friday restaurants/spots.

Details at http://www.arizonahistoricalsociety.../Living_History

-----------------------------------------

Arizona State Fair, at the fairgrounds about 5 miles from the airport. Details at http://www.azstatefair.com/

--------------------------------

There were some folks interested in a Mileage Run seminar. I'd be willing to do one of those, too--- Saturday would probably be the optimal time.

---------------------------------

For Saturday dinner, I think Bill Johnson's Big Apple is a good choice as a western-style steak house with character. The location at 3757 Van Buren St. is located less than a mile from Sky Harbor and is very accessible for folks on an overnight mileage run.

So, of the above options, which ones seem of most interest???

Those look like some good options, VJ. ^ I missed the MN State Fair this year, so I suppose I could substitute the AZ State Fair. Otherwise the living history event sounds cool, and it's closer if people don't want to venture too far. I have a feeling that there's going to be a fairly strong desire for a MR seminar though. Fters love to get out and see the local sights, but I think they love sitting down and talking about points and miles more.

Also, someone suggested a picnik. That might be a fun thing to do if we can find a nice park or some shady trees (Phoenix does have those, right? ). Perhaps a picnik in conjunction with the possible seminar for those who want to do that?

I just found this thread (Thanks Jan for the post in the US forum!) and if I am in town that weekend I will be there. I should know within the next week or so, but looks good at this point.

I would vote for a MR seminar, especially now with the new US info. I am short this year and need lots of miles in the next few months!

It's a bit out of the way (about 120 miles, to be exact ), but the Pima Air Museum is really cool. I went there as a kid and it was very impressive. It would definitely be a whole day excursion and we'd probably have to leave as a contingent utilizing carpooling or something Saturday morning...but it could be a lot of fun, too. ...but it's basically driving to Tucson, so I can understand if no one wants to do that. There's also the Marana/Pinal airpark where many jetliners go to be mothballed while airlines are in bankruptcy or where they go when decommissioned. I don't know if we could get in and see any of them or not, but it might be worth investigating if we're in the neighborhood.

Another option would be going to Taliesin West, former home of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and current home of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. I was also here as a kid and I thought it was very interesting as well. Located in Scottsdale, it's a good bit closer than the air museum above, so maybe this would be of more interest as a group? I dunno.

There are also several prominent American-Indian ruin sites in/around the area which might be fun to visit. One I remember from my visits to the PHX area as a kid was the Casa Grande ruins . About midway between PHX and TUS, it might be do-able if enough people wanted to.

---

Anyway, just a few thoughts to mull over...because everyone likes indecision, including me!

Personally I am not up for going to Tucson - its about 5 hours round trip to where the air museusm is. I will pass on the Casa Grande ruins also - I am not even sure where they are and I go to those outlets on the way to Tucson a lot. I suggested the Talisen house about 15 or 20 posts up and got no feedback.

Its official - I will be attending. I arrive 9:11pm Friday night from DEN and will miss most of the festivities.

As for Saturday - my votes is for the 10:30 am Arizona Challenger ride, followed by an afternoon at the Arizona State Fair.

On Sunday, I am pondering a quick jaunt to DEN in the morning for DYMTWTU credits. Is anyone interested in joining me?

I'm sorry I missed that post from July 31st. I would be in favor of Taliesin West if others are interested.

I know TUS is a drive, but I just wanted to suggest some more things in case the lack of response was due to a lack of interest in the suggested items. Personally, I'll do whatever. I just wanted to seed the communal mindset with some more options. FWIW, Casa Grande is pretty easy to find, but it's fine if people don't want to go.

Hotel stuff

If folks are looking to do hotels on the cheap, I suggest the many Cendant Hotels along Van Buren.

One to start with:

For Fri. and Sat., at the Super 8 at 965 E. Van Buren: King is $63.74 on triprewards.com vs. $46.00 on expedia. 2 Queens are $72.24 on triprewards.com vs. $54.00 Remember you can only do one night for the Best Rate Guarantee.

This hotel is next to downtown, 1 block from a 24 hour convenience store, and easy walking distance to the Movie Theaters and restaurants at Arizona Center and the Ball stadiums. Ride the Red Line bus from the airport and get off 2 blocks away at 7th St. and Van Buren (the route is on detour, so the walk is shorter than usual).

================================================== =======

Other hotels along Van Buren are the Travelodge at 2900 E. Van Buren (free airport shuttle), the Days Inn at 3333 E. Van Buren (free airport shuttle), another Super 8 at 3401 E. Van Buren (free airport shuttle), and a Ramada Limited at 4120 E. Van Buren (free airport shuttle). Another Travelodge at 3101 N. 32nd St. (NO airport shuttle) isn't far. The dinner spot at Bill Johnsons, and also the Tempe events Friday, were selected with the Cendant property locations in mind. I don't know of competing sites for Best Rate Guarantees at these properties, but I'm pretty sure it is possible to snag free nights at these.

If you choose to not stay with Cendant, there is a Crowne Plaza (44th St. and Washington), a Doubletree (44th St. and Van Buren), and an Embassy Suites (about 1500 N. 44th St.) in the immediate area, all with free airport shuttles.

================================================== ======

Regarding the events, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post and state which option(s) you're interested in so we can focus the schedule a little bit. Also, we can plan a brunch get together Sunday if folks are interested. I will research Brunch options in the immediate area.

Re. historic sites, there is the Pueblo Grande Museum complex at 4619 E. Washington, in the immediate area of the airport hotels listed above. I would really recommend that over a drive to Casa Grande. Museum hours are 9am to 4:45pm Saturday. Details are here: http://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/PARKS/pueblo.html
