Naturally, that leaves one wondering what other information about the Do might be incorrect, what other surprises lie waiting. Not my cup of tea.

I was expecting to be able to rely on the information provided.

I was serious. I bought an airline ticket and made a hotel reservation. I had every intention of attending until I found out that information I had relied upon was incorrect, had been known to be incorrect, could easily have been corrected but was not, and was even repeated after it was known to be incorrect. That's just not for me.
The information is correct as it is. PayPal was chosen as the mean to guarantee the dinner.

Some who were reluctant to use PayPal had plenty of opportunities to contact me or cawhite for alternative arrangements - that was from the time the deposit requirement was posted until the deadline. Several PMs were sent and posts were done - at which point you can communicate your problem with PayPal (yes, before the deadline - NOT after, please).

I don't think 'insiders' is the correct term.
What made you assumed that the persons who made alternative arrangements were 'insiders'?

"Naturally, that leaves one wondering what other information about the Do might be incorrect, what other surprises lie waiting. Not my cup of tea."

Lighten up. This is a gathering to have fun. It was open for anyone who were interested.
Me and cawhite are more than happy to help making the dinner reservations, negotiate some hotel rates, etc. For the Mozaic deposit, we tried to accommodate people who have concerns about using PayPal, when they communicate with us. This does not make those people 'insiders' (in a bad context).

I think we provided reasonably clear information here on this thread.

I don't ask for special favors from volunteers. The problem I have is that after the alternative was made available to some, it was repeated to others that payment would only be accepted via PayPal. You can twist that around however you like, but the organizers were not beholden to anyone from whom they had not received funds and those interested in attending were not beholden to attend.

I already explained that. Twice.

I'm not sure what sort of gratitude you're looking for MovieMan. I've been repeatedly asked to justify why I won't be attending and I have attempted to explain that as straightforwardly as possible. I have gone out of my way to avoid pointing fingers while still giving meaningful answers to the questions asked of me. It simply became clear to me that this particular Do is not for me. I don't know why you seem to have a problem with that. I hope everyone who attends has a great time.

I don't know why people take such delight in airing dirty laundry in public. I will not post about this again. If anyone wishes to interrogate me further, please do so by PM.

I seriously hope you don't think for one moment that Cawhite and StarG conjured this up over tea and scones one afternoon by snapping their fingers and letting it all come to pass.

Perhaps that is how it's done elsewhere on FT - but here, nothing like a bit of elbow grease. If that doesn't warrant some form of appreciation in your opinion - then you are INDEED right - this do - is not for you in more ways than one.

Thank you, but not this year. Again, I hope everyone attending has a great time.

Even I'm not that stupid. I know they had to mix salamander livers, guppy teeth, and the urine of a retromingent mammal and then utter the magic incantation too.

There is no conjuring involved. It's work.

Get the Privilege Club card (free at the airport)

you all should try to grap one of the 2006/07 Privilege Cards booklets at the airport.

almost all hotels (conrad, westin, sheraton , hyatt etc.) are offering free perks if you present this card.

normally 10% off at restaurants or discounts at spa etc.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia6820/2.0 (3.92) Profile/MIDP-1.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0)

The upgrade God is smiling on me tonight. Bumped up to 15H. The only problem is that I am too exhausted to fully enjoy.
See you all soon!

I can actually empathize with zvezda on this. With no disrespect meant towards cawhite and StarG (who have done a great job organising this, btw ^ ) I was also under the impression that PayPal was the only option for the deposit. I had issues with my PayPal account that only got resolved around 15 May, and if they had not been resolved by the deadline, I would simply have not paid the deposit and skipped the Mozaic dinner. It didn't occur to me to PM the organisers to ask if there were alternatives , and I'm sure that it didn't occur to zvezda as well.

Having said that, I wouldn't cancel all my plans over a minor logistical incident involving one dinner. Its Bali, its a long weekend, and there are plenty of other opportunities to hang out with crazy, jetlagged FTers

i had the same problem, and i did add new cards to my papyal account but i still havent got my new pins to active the cards in my account.

so i cant use paypal atm.

i think too, skipping the mozaic dinner is a bit overreacting, but as zvesda seems to join the dinner in singapore with flamboyrant and others, he is hopefully spending a good time somewere else.

as i am now 3 days in bali, i cant clearly say it is a mistake not coming here, as it is wonderful.

you are welcome

indeed there are some nice deals inside. some are offering 20$ off in the restaurant.
some hotels offering free massages, some offering 10% discounts.

i first wanted to through it away, but than i realized that the issuer did a great job as they got almost all hotels in bali covered.

Honestly I only knew of paypal as the only option for payment. But since I arrive so late, I did not care that much about the first dinner. Maccaroni Club is decent as well, thanks for all your updates, Mr. Pelikan!

RC Bahrain is lovely. And thanks to CGK for arranging the SKL visit!

I too have some empathy for that, but I don't have an ounce of empathy for the rift about insiders and about what other misinformation may lie ahead in the Do activities. It assumed the worst about the organizers' intentions and was, IMO, offensive.

dp, you're trouble for my concentration at work! Two hours to go ...
