- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

Or, you know, two AA cards... there's a big ol' thread in the MilesBuzz! forum about why people play it that way. Excellent resource in your research.

There is no AA Platinum credit card, or AA Gold credit card that you can apply for. Depending on whether you apply for a Visa or MC or Amex, the card you get might be at a "platinum" or "gold" level (credit limit category and such), but you don't apply for one of those. (And in some cases the "platinum" is renamed "siganture".)

Separately, there is of course a non-credit AA Platinum elite status card, but that's not what we mean by "card" in this discussion (which is about retention offers, which has nothing to do with status levels).

My AA card is Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature.
No, I would not recommend applying for one AA and one HHonors.

I would recommend applying for two AAs: One Amex and one Visa. It doesn't mater that you already have a Visa, you can still apply for another Visa. Applying for two AA at a time is the only way to get two AA bonuses in less than two years. If you apply for an AA and an HHonors at the same time, you can only get one AA bonus, and then have to wait 2 years again to get a second AA bonus. But if you apply for 2 AA (using the "two browser type trick", for example) at the same time, you will likely get both bonuses (if you can fullfill the minimum spend requiprement for both bonuses, that is). And then, in few months, you can apply for the 2 HHonors cards at the same time (and get both of those bonuses).

You thus get more bonuses total by applying 2 of the same type of card at the same time than by mixing two completely different Citi cards.

Annual fee is $50 for "Gold". Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, there is a "Apply Now" button.

My account has flight points added after I make merchant purchases, so I don't want to lose it. I asked for some extra points, and she said she was limited today to the offers she described. "Today" possibly means they'll beef up their offer tomorrow?
I'll edit as this story continues.
Anybody get any other offers for the Premier TY card? This is the only one I've seen listed in the last 60 days. Got one coming up in the next 30 days. Thanks

I was also offered 10,000 points with $3000 spend.

Though that was in Aug as reported here.

My points is that it's a Visa, and an AA card. And the fact that it's "Gold" is just an additional piece of information, not the main piece of information.

The problem was that one perosn posted they had a "Platinum" card (with no other infomration), and that's not sifficient information, since that's not the name of the card, just the level.

(There is a general problem in this thread in that while the thread is about "cit" "all cards", each retention report is obviously about a particular Citi card, but people aren't being careful to specify which exact cart they called about. This "Platinum" post that started all this is just one example of this.)

Meanwhile, there is another bank (Amex) that does put out card that is officially named "Platinum".

It would be great IMHO if this thread could adopt a standard format (along the lines of the Marriott forum's report LNF successes thread), something like:

I have had my Citi <partner> <level> <network> card for <x time>, and my annual fee <hit / will hit when>. I called <which number> <what day of the week and time of day> and asked <this quesiton> and was offered <these offers>. I <took / did not take> <which offer>.

AAUUGGHHHH! I read this after applying for the Hhonors card this AM and getting approved. I applied for and got approved for the AA card Friday.

Thanks for the info, though I messed it up

Done with the highjacking of this thread.

In the future, apply same type of Citi cards 2 at a time. Dont mix HHonor with any other Citi card because the inquiry comes from a different division so you would not get the benefit of "merging of inquiries" by the reporting agency even if you apply them on the same day.

To this day for those of us who do not have Citi bank account(s), the HHonor cards must have its own user id, cannot be added to the existing userid of other citi cards such as AA and TYP.

Now back to the normal program.

Also called in about Citi ThankYou Premier card, which has a hefty $125 annual fee coming up. They offered either a $125 statement credit for spending $4500 in 3 months, or a $75 statement credit for spending $1000 in 3 months. I like this card since it makes my TY points more valuable (25%-33%) on flight redemption, plus you earn miles on these flights (compared to zero miles for other award flight redemption).

But the annual fee is quite high. Told the rep I'd think about it and call back - she said that the promotion might change at any time.

Ill use your new format...

I have had my Citi AA Visa signature card for 11 months, and my annual fee will hit december. I called number on back of card on tuesday afternoon and asked "annual fee coming due, thinking about closing account" and was offered $85 statement credit (no spending requirement) + 750 bonus miles each month I spend over $750 for 16 months. I took it.

My wife called tonight on her Premier card. The fee was on this months statement that came today. They offered 10,000 typ's with $3,000 spend over 6 months or 5,000 TYP's with $1,000 spend over 3 months. Took the 10,000 TYP's because we have $1,000+ spend we'll put on it Friday and easily will put on $2,000+ in the next 3-4 months.
