- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

We for the $95 credit for 5 purchase offer for 3 Citi AA cards. They won't budge any further Definitely not as good as last year's retention offers.

for Citi TYP I was initially offered

statement credit $100 for i think $4500 spend over 3 months

i said what else that's too much spend too fast for me:

statement credit $50 for i think $1000 over 3 months

i said what else, what about points, well let's see here

10k pts for $3000 spend over 6 months

or 5 k pts for i forgot how much.

I said I'll take the 10k pts for $3000...

I paid the $175 fee because get the 2 companion passes, and I still have quite a few points to burn, and 10k pts is worth $133...

I closed my other TYP. (no points left in that one)

I just called for my TY Premier for the annual fee due in Feb and got the following options:

10,000 TYP for $3K purchases in 6 months.

5,000 TYP for $1K purchases in 3 months.

1 additional TYP for 3 months of everything purchases

2 additional TYP for 3 months of travel purchases

2 additional TYP for 3 months of restaurant purchases

I opted for 10K TYP. I will cancel the card anyway once the bonus TYP is posted.

Just make sure you need to spend those pts within 30 days after canceling the card. Else you lose them. There is no way to extend it, not even transfer to spouse.

Yes - I have plans to deplete the points. Don't have travel plans coming up, so won't be getting 33% off a flight with the points, but will convert the points to Staples giftcards and use them all on FAR purchases.

Called yesterday and offered same, but with card get 10 percent rebate on awards and one free checked bag for up to four on same itinerary. Took the offer since need to not churn too much.

Hello Everyone!

All of us who applied and got AA Citi Business Visa around this time last year, we have annual fee due this statement . My statement shows $75 annual fee.

Anyone with any success story for this particular card?

Cheers!

Anyone have any luck getting Citicards to waive the annual fee in exchange for keeping Citibank checking/savings account balances at some level? I'd sort of like to keep this card for the 10% AA miles rebate.

Maybe it'd be smarter to just churn it anyway. Opinions?

Citi personal American Airlines American Express platinum
Citi personal American Airlines Visa platinum

For each card, I was offered $95 statement credit after 5 purchases of any amount in the next three months, but starting no sooner than 48 hours from my accepting these offers, which I did.

I have provided a lot of detail below for the benefit of people getting ready to call in, but, for those who don't feel the need to slog through it, I think the key takeways are: nobody seemed bothered that my spending has been almost entirely for bonuses on all of my Citi cards or that I had two personal Citi American Airlines cards, but perhaps factors in my favor are that I paid one non-free annual fee on each AA card and that this was the first time I requested retension offers.

Anyhow, here are the details.

Account history:

I got these cards two years ago by applying for both on the same day for the the 100k miles for $10k spend offers. I also obtained a Citi AA business visa under essentially the same terms a few months later, and then, more than a year later, obtained a Citi Thank You Preferred card, making very heavy use of their sign-up bonus of 1 year of 5X points for gas, groceries and pharmacies, which I completed a few months ago. Since completing the sign-up bonuses on each of these cards, I have generally only used these cards to take advantage of promotions or a tiny purchase as part of my habit of trying to reset the expiration on each of my frequent flyer accounts a little more than once a year. One factor that may have worked in my favor is that, last year, I paid the annual fees on all three AA cards without requesting a deal. I have never had any other accounts of any kind with Citi.

I don't think I have used any of the AA cards in months, although I was told by the retensions specialist "I see you have been using this card" when she pulled up my AA Amex, the card I use the least. I think that may have been a reference to my using the card about six months ago during a 5 mile/$ promotion up to 2500 mies for spending in certain categories.

About the phone call:

When I called in, I originally called the regular customer service number, not the retensions number. The automated phone system seemed not to recognize my AmEx card number, so I gave it my Visa card number. After it gave me my balance information without my asking for it, it transferred me to a live representative, also without my asking. Perhaps it does this for everyone who has an annual fee due but not yet paid. I mentioned at the outset that I had two cards both with an annual fee due that I didn't want to pay and asked if there were any active promotions already on either card. There weren't, although the represenative did run through the standard features of the cards (free checked bag, etc.). Then I explained that I was considering either downgrading to Bronze or cancellling, and asked if I would get a checked bag with bronze. No. I asked if I would get two free checked bags per flight because I had both cards. The representative was not sure. Pause. I think someone who was not aware that Citi routinely makes retension offers might not have gotten one. At this point, I said to the representative something like, "well, do you have any retension offers because otherwise I think I'll do some combination of downgrading to bronze or canelling", and I made sure to pronounce "retension offers" clearly. The representative then politely transferred me to a retension specialist.

The retension specialist first asked me to update my address information. After that, I made a point of explaining that I wasn't doing this to express any dissatisfaction with Citi and that, in particular, I was happy with their customer service. The representative then said that, to avoid paying the annual fee currently due, I wanted either to downgrade to Bronze or cancel, but that I was alternatively interesting in considering any retension offer if they'd like to make one. The retension specialist went through the offer of a $95 statement credit (equal to my annual fee) after five purchases of any amount within three months, which I accepted without thinking to ask about other offers. When the retension specialist got the point of asking "is there anything else I can do for you?", I mentioned that I had a second AA credit card in exactly the same situation, and we went through updating my contact information again. After she entered the second card number, she determined that she could make the same offer for my second card, which I also accepted.

I'm not kicking myself for twice forgetting to ask about other offers, as I have pretty good spending deals on other cards at the moment, especially Chase Ink Bold, and most of the other offers I see reported on this thread tend to be of similar value to just getting the fee waived.

Used to help to be CitiGold, but I don't think that'll help with new accounts... See posts 88 and 89.
