- Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

Often this means you have to actually say specifically you "want to cancel the card because..." before they can offer you something. Being vague saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card", or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion.

- Offers may include cash, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending on the card.

- You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568, and avoid the front line customer service reps.

- For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

Citi TYP Premier

Citi TYP Premier - Called to cancel. Was offered two options

1) 10K bonus for 3K spend in 6 months
2) 2x points for next 3 months

Asked for both the options ;-), but it was a no-go. So, took the first one

Need help with retention offer

I have Citi AAdvantage American Express and Citi AAdvantage Visa Signature which I got by using two browser technique. The annual fee is due on both so I called Citi. I got fee waived on Visa as a credit to the statement but for AmEx the CSR only offered 3000 miles with $500 purchase in three month. Should I accept the deal on AmEx or call again. He also mentioned downgrading to bronze card without annual fee. Please let me know what should I do. Thanks

Citi AMEX Advantage offer

My husband received the same offer 3000 miles for $500 spend in 3 months. First, though, the initial rep tried to convince him that a balance transfer was the only offer. After he declined the balance transfer, he was transferred to retention and got the real offer.

Although not all, many many people have reported the same experience (good retention offer for AA Visa, bad retention offer for AA Amex). I saw so many of these eaeler this year that many many months ago I "proactively" cancelled my Amex (even long berfore it would have came up for renewal)and only kept my Visa, which btw will only come up for renewal in the next month. (You only need of the cards for all the new benefits, so why keep both if you can't a good retention offer on the second one?)

I like this card since it makes my TY points more valuable (25%-33%) on flight redemption, plus you earn miles on these flights (compared to zero miles for other award flight redemption).

But the annual fee is quite high. Told the rep I'd think about it and call back - she said that the promotion might change at any time.
That is what I got offered as well today. I also said I'll think about it. Not sure what I'll do yet.

My retention offer

This is for citi AA Business card.

Called the number all on the back, told rep I'm thinking of cancelling the card because there aren't many business transactions right now. Got transferred to a specialist, he asked the same thing and I repeat the same reason why I want to cancel. This was the offer and I took it:

1. $75 statement credit (after 1-2 billing cycles)
2. 750 bonus miles per billing cycle if spend at least $750 per cycle for 16 cycles.

Received exactly same offer for same card (Citi Business AA Visa Card) and took it. By the way, first account specialist (who answered the call made to Customer Service number from the back of the card) was ready to cancel the card, but then I asked for 'retention department' specifically and that is when I received the offer.

Cheers!

Had my wife call regarding her upcoming annual fee. Was told that they would give her the $85 statement credit and the rep also said we should call back because they could probably also offer her bonus points for hitting monthly spends.

**We haven't paid a Citibank annual fee in over 4 years in our household** Love it!

Got this offer today on my AA Amex too. They also offered me a second option of switching my card to a no-fee card that gave 1 mile for every $2 spent. I declined both since I have an AA Visa. They transferred my Amex credit limit to the Visa, effectively doubling it.
