Retention on AAdvantage Platinum Select

Called the number on the back of the AAdvantage Platinum Select card and stated that I was considering closing the account due to the annual fee. After a few minutes on hold for a transfer to retention, I was offered between a $99 credit after spending $99 in 1 month and 7,500 bonus miles after spending $1,000 in 3 months. Either choice was acceptable to me, but I ended up taking the miles offer.

Called to close my AA Executive card. Annual fee posted at $450 and was surprised to have a couple offers of $3k/3mos/$100 statement credit or $1k/3mos/7.5k miles. I declined both and continued to close since I don't plan on flying AA this year.

AA Biz Retention Offer DP

Called to cancel card after AF posted - the statement w/ the AF is actually past due by 2 days. Haven't had any spend on the card since meeting MSR Sep last year - opened in June 2023.
First agent said no retention offer and transferred me to "senior specialist" to close the card who immediately provided me with this retention offer:
1. $99 statement credit after $1k spend in 3 months
I said I passed and he gave me this offer:
2. 7500 AA miles after $1k spend/3mo.

I passed and closed the account.

9 year Citi Premier Strata with pretty minimal spending. Annual fee that came up.

1) 1k spend per month over 3 month for $95 + 1k TY points
2) 3k spend over 6 month for 10k TY points

Took 2nd offer since less book keeping.

Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard

I’ve become spoiled by (domestic) Admirals Club access via the (6 month) British Airways status match earlier this year, thinking of applying for Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard which would be my first Citi card in several years and see minimal use after SUB due to most AA tickets being award tickets and healthy Bask Bank earned AA miles. I’ve reviewed the WikiPost and the past few months of this thread but see little mention of retention offers for this card. I’m very familiar with AmEx retention offers, relatively familiar with Chase retention offers.

In the past year or 2, are there reliable reports of significant retention offers for this card? Can this credit card’s Annual Fee be paid with AA miles? Thank you.

I don't recall seeing any reports of retention offers for the Executive Card since the changes were implemented in July 2023. I have never seen anything to suggest that the annual fee can be paid with AAdvantage miles; however, it is possible to pay for an Admirals Club membership using miles; 70K - 85K for individual membership and $150 - $165K for household membership.

BTW, we have a dedicated thread discussing the AAdvantage Executive Card.

Success:
AT&T Access More - 10,000 points for spending $3,000 in 3 months
Strata Premier - 10,000 points for spending $3,000 in 3 months

Failure:
No offers on Custom Cash, Double Cash, Rewards+. Lower APR only on AA Platinum Select. Only $100 (or 10,000 points) for spending $3,000 each month for 3 months for Citi Prestige. I downgraded that to my 3rd Custom Cash.

If you didn't cancel the card, you must find the deal at least somewhat attractive, right ;)
It's a voluntary contract, not a tax.

Well considering they just raise the annual fee this is the first time I've had to consider it and no I'm not really enjoying it. Don't really need your snark thanks

Probably the same people who opt to take a credit card with an annual fee of $595.

The Executive card is an Admirals Club membership bundled with a credit card. The alternative is to purchase an Admirals Club membership directly from American Airlines. If you need a Household membership the cost varies from $1,500 to $1,650 per year, depending on your AAdvantage status level.

They didn't just raise the AF, it was done in July 2023 so cardholders were aware of it for more than a year, but perhaps this was the first time you were hit with it so it made you rethink if this card is worth it for you.

It's the same as happens when the AF for other "luxury" cards go up (i.e. Amex Plat, Chase Sapphire Reserve, etc). Everyone needs to do the math to see if the card is a still a keeper for them at the new AF level. It's not about "who" can afford it but "who" finds enough value that it's worth keeping the card.

(On a side note, I didn't read MaxVO post as snarky, and I doubt that there was any intention of that.)

Agreed, I saw it as a witty phrasing of the situation.

Strata Premier - 10,000 points for spending $3,000 in 3 months.
AT&T Access More -
no offer. This is the first time I have no retention offer on this card since 2018...
