If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Transferring points between the two accounts that "use the same address" (your words) would have the appearance of one of you selling points to the other. That's why I asked. Selling points would be a cause for shutdown.

Sometime back there was some talk that having a banking relationship with Chase increases the odds of a shutdown. Is that still true?

Yes, in the same sense that people with a bathtub in their home are more likely to drown in their bathtub than people who don't have a bathtub.

I don't mean to sound harsh or abrasive, but how are you "unsure" whether points were transferred to or from your account from someone at the same address? If you transferred points to them, obviously you should be aware of that. If they transferred points to you, didn't you notice your UR balance going up?

Part of the reason I hate this overall thread is that almost every post is couched in mystery and vagueness. If one purpose of posting in this forum is serve as a warning to others, the only way it helps is if the details are shared.

In this particular case, my gut feeling is there is more to the story. There almost always is...

There's obviously more to this story, or else the OP wouldn't have asked if Chase allows people to "provide additional information to support your request for re-opening." If absolutely nothing happened, what information could that be?

There are strongly held opinions on this question, but little compelling evidence. The primary concern is that more points of contact increases the chance that someone will pay attention to something that would otherwise go unnoticed, and if Chase closes one type of account they often close all accounts.

The words seemingly carefully chosen (two separate times) by OP suggest to me that at least one (or perhaps both) of the parties does not actually reside at the "permanent address" they listed with Chase. That's my sense, anyway.

If there is address change just prior to the point transfer, then the transfer is suspicious. If the two parties have been the same address for quite some time (like 6 months?), then it is perfectly normal. They do not even have to have same last name since the wife may have kept her own name and there are domestic partner etc....

I can honestly think of a half dozen things that could've set off Chase's account flagging algorithm. Attempting to understand the logic Chase used and the specific reason the accounts were targeted would be of little practical use here. I was only hoping to determine whether anything specific could be inferred from the"affiliate" language Chase used in their shutdown letter - it appears that it cannot.

Are there any other points of contact at Chase besides the Executive Office that may be of use? Is it only after failing to gain additional info / make progress with Chase directly that it is helpful to open a CFPB complaint?

In your first or second post, you said you didn't have the slightest clue of what could have attracted Chase's attention. There's no point to this if people don't lay out the facts upfront.

At no point did I say anything to this affect. In my second post I did identify a few potential Chase triggers that I thought it would be possible to rule out in my case. Sorry if erring on the side of revealing minimal personal information when posting to a public forum created any confusion.

All the information we have is in this thread. Feel free to read it if you haven't already. The info is there because people have shared their experiences to help others like yourself going forward. That's what this thread is for. You choose a different route: sharing as little information as possible and even then, doing it coyly and removing it afterwards. That of course is your prerogative, but it doesn't seem to be generating much sympathy for your plight.

I've read the wiki and large parts of the longer thread - it's been extremely helpful.

FWIW I'd recommend those dealing with Chase closures immediately start calling Chase and keep it up until you are able to get someone there to provide you with a closure rationale over the phone - do not wait for the letter. Phone reps have the info so just be persistent and/or hang up and call back until you get one that will share it with you.

After you know what the issue was then gather any relevant info and open a case with Chase Executive Office asap. The 30 day clock is ticking as soon as your cards are closed.

Why would you recommend this? What exactly have you gained so far?

My point is that there's no reason to wait for the closure letter from Chase to arrive - the details can be obtained via phone. Multiple data points describe affected account holders being told to wait until they have received a closure letter from Chase, but this is not necessary. Not waiting for the letter to initiate having your closures reviewed can save a significant amount of time.
