If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

The "shared permanent address" part sounds intrigue and you have not answered repeated questions asked about this implication... just an example.
Again, sorry if erring on the side of revealing minimal personal information when posting to a public forum created any confusion. There is no intrigue ^

While I'm viewed as a shutdown alarmist, I nevertheless counsel that shutdowns are both infrequent and difficult to accidentally trigger. That said, one person's "infrequent" may be another's "too frequent." YMMV. My skittishness comes from having an enormous stake in URs and a long range plan for their use.
Keep in mind devaluation comes very often these days. The long range plan may be scuttled by that instead of being shut down. Just take how many times UA has devalued, and the long haul J seat cost have gone up in just short 3 years... KE is no longer a partner.... Hyatt probably is the last hotel program that does not set out to fleece its loyal customers...

Hyatt was very late offering a co-branded credit card, but now that they have the supply of unredeemed points will increase much faster than it did previously, and the result will be the same as it has been at other chains. The only way to balance the supply of award nights with growing demand is to increase redemption costs.

How late? Might be wrong, but I thought the WoH predecessor had been around for about a decade.

Yes, 2010, but (example) there have been co-branded Hilton cards since 1995. Hyatt did accept transfers from Diners Club, but the rate was less than 1:1 (1250:750), and they did not accept transfers from American Express which Hilton, Marriott and IHG did.

Hyatt Gold Passport existed in the early 1980s. I know because I worked for Hyatt then. But I don't know when the CC started.

For the high end upmarket properties, most definitely. But the low end Hyatt House and Hyatt Place there are still a lot of very useful 8K and 5K properties that other chains want much much more for same caliber of properties. These properties are not in obscure locations either. Quite often you see comparable Marriott properties nearby cost 20K and up while the Hyatt properties are 8K, as an example.

Some of the 8K properties actually came down to 5K this year, fwiw.

With avg 30 to 40 nights hotel stay in a year, 100% out of own pocket, we keep close tap on how each program behaves. While there are a few Hyatt properties we use have become too expensive in pts on this year's chart, the rest stay the same and some go down. I am quite pleased by this year's change.

Hilton probably has the biggest earning power in terms of its cards and ways to earn points - they seem to have stay promotions year round - and that is the prime reason why the redemption cost also goes up the fastest. Hyatt points on the other hand, is hard to earn thru its own card / stay, but thankfully UR is relatively easy to earn. That is a very important factor to keep UR competitive.

From reading some of the old posts, it seems the Chase "travel notice" function is a trap. There have been several DPs of cardholders who found their CCs get closed after return from overseas trips. The "travel notice" may trigger some kind of reviews.

I think AmEx is much more travel friendly since it can track if you use your AmEx phone app to locate where you are physically located and use that info to determine the legit charges.

I'd avoid setting the Chase "travel notice".

Chase mobile app also uses location information. In any event, this assumes that travelers routinely use these apps.

Yes Chase app does. But I've not seen any DPs of AmEx financial reviews shortly after overseas travels. But with Chase, at least several DPs.

I have seen reports of American Express freezing accounts during overseas trips. Intrigued by your hypothesis about mobile app usage, but I don't see how it would explain a difference when both companies have this capability.
