It falls into no-mans land. It's billing in HKD but from France. So neither the local nor overseas offer applies.

As someone who is new to the HK miles maximising game and has just used my CX Amex for 3 years (typical spend per year of 300k HKD, mostly in HK), is there a simple way to increase his without having to rely on the 6x and changing cards per item with HSBC?

Is churning though SC and others the way to go with their welcome offers?

Doesn't seem like I'm maximising with the CX card.

Thanks - lots of the info on thread is very advanced for relative novice like me

BEA Flyer World Mastercard or SCB Worldmiles AE $5/mile. 16.67% gain (I daresay you'll be able to use the Mastercard in even more places than Worldmiles/CX Amex)

Question regarding cancelling SCB and waiving annual fee.

I have a SCB platinum (not worldmiles( credit card that has an annual fee with the first year waived. It will be officially one year in a few days’ time. I don’t plan on using this card going forward so I’m going to cancel it.

I believe there’s a charge with cancelling before one year is up…

Do I have to wait till they charge me an annual fee for me to cancel? If I cancel within 30 days of their charge then I am ok…correct?

Ppr992 correct so you can have the card effectively for 13 months at least. Not that I doubt they will deny you a second year waiver anyway.

Oh why is it at least 13 months? Isn't it supposed to be 12?

The 12 months you officially have the card and the 30 days you have to cut it after being billed for the annual fee (Code of Banking Practice para 26.9 http://www.hkma.gov.hk/media/eng/doc...ng.pdf#page=25)

Thanks

I just found out about hsbc changing their reward conversion from 15:1 to 10:1. I only have 300 rewardcash on this one luckily.

Is it still worth paying the $300 to convert now?

Not really.

The Rewardcash has $300 value if redeemed into coupon (you don't have more on other cards? Combined redemption allowed).

If you redeem miles you're getting 4,500 Asia Miles for $600 ($300 coupons forgone + 300 fee). In other words you're paying $0.133 per mile

Worth?

Seems no. When is the expiry date of the RCs?

it's in 2018. was planning to really use hsbc a lot in 2016 till I found out about the changes

Well it's unlikely I'll accumulate anymore hsbc rc in the future. What should my strategy be?

Only have roughly 300~ rc
1) Pay $300, convert it in 2015?
2) Pay $300, convert it in 2016 if I have other rc but seeing the changes I don't plan on spending much
3) Convert it to a gift certificate at supermarket etc

Suggest option 2. Wait till 2018 and see if it is better to convert to coupon or miles by then.

Although reduced conversion rate, still the best card to use for 9x category merchants (2.78/miles) except some other short term promotions.

Btw, seeing that your RCs are expiring in 2018, I guess you have a premier card? You can consider converting your RC to BA or SQ, which have the conversion rate remained at 1RC = 15 miles, later.

I'd take the ~$300 in Octopus Rewards and then spend it at Wellcome. Don't stress about small stuff! :-)
