Last day for phase 1. I'm topping up my CCBs with online gift cards right now.

I just got my waiver for 2016, one month advance of it being due. Got it via IVR.

Thanks Percy! Wish that I could have such an analytical brain! Hope you don't mind but I have another quick question, I've also signed up for Instant Travel Club for CCB. Can I earn the points from both programs? Thank you!!

Just to be clear, there's an option on the automatic IVR for "please give me this for free" and it is granted automatically? Why would anyone ever pay? And why do HSBC do so many things that just uselessly take up people's time?

Yes. 2233 3000 --> 1 --> 3 --> card no --> phone pin --> 0 --> 1 (normally I would have pressed 0 for an operator)

Well, sometimes I start too early and have to write them in internet banking messaging.

World's local bank...I've whinged about this for some time but the banks saw fit to continue http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...l#post21388145

Then again quite clearly the banks think it's smart and they can get away with it - or else why would SCB put out another "10%" offer to insult our intelligence?

Thanks - I guess I'll apply then. Which brings up a corollary - does anyone (by which I guess I mean you percysmith :-) ) know how picky Citibank are about the spend qualification to keep the PremierMiles card for free? Officially I believe it's a spend of HK$100,000 per year, which I have been doing, more or less, and haven't been asked for a renewal fee ever as far as I can recall. I have about 2.4M points (= 200K AsiaMiles) on there which I don't want to transfer to AM until I know that I'll want to use them soon (since they are alive for ever on PremierMiles, but expire in 3 years once transferred to AM).

This year I was granted waiver on about HK$20K in foreign spend (and I earned both my welcome and up to $2/mile offer for that). But I've other spend on Rewards and on Prestige.

No I've never heard off anyone not granted waiver. I think spend $100K and you get it automatically, that's all, but everyone else (except one or two, maybe they're marginal credits) have gotten waivers for the asking.

It's the ultimate Hongkie card...

Red face 3 cards to use for spending in 2016

Hi guys,

I recently had the unpleasant experience of learning that all my overseas spending on my HSBC Premier and Signature is capped at HK$180K for the purpose of the 6x and 9x. When I applied for the Signature, I was given to understand that a different card means another HK$180K spending/miles earning. As overseas spending (mostly online) is easily my most significant chunk of spending, I am a bit pissed at HSBC naturally. All those wasted miles that I could have put into Fubon!

Anyway, with the downgrading of HSBC RCs from 1RC: 15 miles to 1 RC to 10 miles (Asiamiles), and the revised spending cap, I'm refining my strategy for airmiles earning via credit card next year, using the cards that I have already. Please use your math genius to help me figure this out:

1. I think I can still use HSBC Visa/Premier but keep spending on both cards under HK$100K. Friday spending does not get me 9X anymore (so I was told) so it doesn't really matter which day of the week I use HSBC for.

2. Fubon ($3/mile) should have no cap on overseas spending, right? Plus, I get Sure Win miles for transactions over HK$600, right?

3. However, given that Fubon's points expire yearly and there is a conversion fee, would I actually be better off putting my overseas spend on DBS AE or Mastercard ($4/mile), seeing that they don't expire and have no conversion fee?

For the moment, I have also registered for SCB VI's 30000 airmiles for HK$50,000 spend, and will spend up to HK$50,000 on it.

All other local transactions will go either to HSBC (hubby's dining category) or BEA Flyerworld.

Am I on the right track or is my understanding off? Thanks.

1. Yes
2. Yes, at or over $600 (we'll have to see on 28 Feb 16 whether they renew it)
3. No. Think of Rubin's conversion fee as an annual fee

3 cards to use for spending in 2016

Thanks Percy!

I guess your mean "Fubon" instead of"Rubin" in your Answer #3?

So, based on your answers, I think my strategy is as follows:

1. load up on SCB VI up to HK$50,000 to get the 30,000 miles.
2. all overseas spend go to: (i) HSBC up to HK$100,000; and (ii) the rest to Fubon (assuming no cap).
3. all local dining go to hubby's HSBC.
4. all other local spend go to BEA Flyerworld MC.
5. DBS Black MC as fall-back card for all of above.

If you have anything to add, please let me know.

Thanks heaps, and merry Christmas!

Maya1005 yes that's more or less it. See if you're going to Japan/Korea/Taiwan (Fubon) or if HSBC is throwing a Red Hot Travel promo (they are now)
