Thanks, I understand the charts in the T&C better now.
It also mean that the Friday 5x are not entering in the calculation of the EXTRA RC when there is special promotion like the Red Hot Festival or the Red Hot Travel Special ?

No, Friday 5X is simultaenously earned with the Red Hot Festival. Depends on which merchant.

E.g. the missus bought $2,500 Mannings over lunch. Her 6X is Home and she's using a VS card. RC earned:

Basic 1X: 10RC
Extra Home 5X: 50RC
Friday 5X: 50RC
VS 3X: 30RC
Designated merchant 8%: 200RC
Mannings extra 4%: 100RC

= 440RC = 6,600 mile = $0.38/mile

She plans to do this for next six Fridays from today. She'll hit maximums, so her total haul is:

Basic 1X: 70RC
Extra Home 5X: 350RC
Friday 5X: 180RC (maximum)
VS 3X: 210RC
Designated merchant 8%: 1,400RC
Mannings extra 4%: 600RC (maximum)

= 2,810RC = 42,150 or $0.415/mile

Take away anything not applicable to you e.g. I'm not Home 5X so I don't get extra 5X nor Friday 5X.

This is great. My 5X is on dining. Any chance to max out in this category, i.e. any designated merchant who is a restaurant and sells dining coupons?

None of the designated merchants are dining.

My DBS Black Mastercard is coming up on 1 year and looks like they will charge an annual fee. Personally I don't think it's a very good card so I will just cancel it.

Has anyone tried cancelling and not having the annual fee charged? Will I get to keep those miles I got from the welcome offer as well?

Off the top of my head I can't remember anyone actually being refused a DBS renewal

You may cancel the card within 30 days of being charged a fee without paying the fee:
26.9 (formerly 25.8) of the CBP http://www.hkma.gov.hk/media/eng/doc...ng.pdf#page=25

Redeem your DBS$ before cancelling as they will become void on cancellation

Did you try call for a waiver? My previous experience is that they always waive the annual fee anyway.

Thanks for the info. No I haven't called them yet.

This is a general question and not specific to the DBS black card. Are there any repercussions when I cancel A card after I've been charged the annual fee but within 30 days. Do I still get to keep the welcome offer? Will I have any trouble signing up a credit card with them in the future?

Well I won't cut it so close but cut it on payment date. Done it, no consequence.

Yes. Just be aware if it is in the form of bonus points (e.g. DBS$) you need to redeem it prior to card cancellation

Some banks don't like customers churning - Wing Lung and Fubon.

When it is better to eat the FX fee to get more AM?

Apologies for not being better at the maths. I'd always previously (perhaps naively) assumed that it's better to use a local card or cash whenever possible overseas, rather than be hit with the FX exchange fee in order to get AM on a Hong Kong card.

But I'm starting to realise that may be wrong, particularly with some of the better earning HK cards on overseas transactions such as Fubon (and, of course, HSBC overseas promos).

For instance, I'm off to UK in a week where I've got a local card that earns 1AM = £1 (or about HK$12). Also have savings in sterling, which I use to pay off the card, so no FX spread if I use my UK card.

Have always used this UK card in preference to HK cards on previous trips. But given that you can earn 4 times as much with Fubon (1AM = HK$3), even using the standard valuation for an AM, I'm guessing I've been getting it wrong and would be better off eating both the FX fee and spread in order to get the extra miles?

Absolutely.
Your case is identical to me and my Australian savings and local Amex credit and Visa debit card.

HSBC promos - you can just think of it as a 8% cash rebate equiv (in miles).
Fubon - about 3%.

Exchange rate is also a factor - if you think GBP is low then spending in HKD means indirectly buying GBP. You can run down your GBP savings when rates are high.

Last Easter back down under I maxed the HSBC overseas promo in place at that time. Given it's my first trip back after Australia's changed to a Chip and PIN jurisdiction I've been getting very weird looks when the terminals start spitting out signature slips and asking cashiers/waiters to verify my signature.

If Fubon works out at about 3% rebate in AM, then it seems only marginally better than a UK mileage earning card, 'cause you're paying 1.95% (or is it 1.85%?) for the FX fee, and then you also have to factor in the spread and forgoing earning (a lesser number of) AM on the UK card?

Yep, actually I find this a real problem in HK as well with Unionpay cards where the restaurant staff (who often don't speak any English) constantly ask if your card has a PIN (I guess many of the mainland cards do).

Only if you want to save your GBPs. I want to go long on AUD with the low exchange rate this year

Just press enter.

I'm always amused when I can have a dinner ordering food and speaking with a waiter in Canto throughout, only to have the waiter quip 有没有密码? when I produce an ICBC Asia card.
