CX171 in late July had 4 lanes for boarding on a 3 class plane. I was at the front of the J line and had to wait until all the DM/Emerald/ F connecting pax had boarded before the rest of us were allowed to board.

If CX can actually do what it says, this is definitely a small plus for those of us who are loyal beyond words to them.
My main question is will it be DM only? Or DM+OWE? It would definitely be a small boost for their own loyalty program if they do DM only. Just curious.

Although I am not ( yet
) a DM, I do hope this is for DM only and not OWE, but my take is that it probably will be for both.

Easy, two reasons.
1) if you're in a seat with crap overhead bin space (like 77H J class mini-cabin), and need the space, or sitting in Y
2) boarding delays at gate. This is the bigger reason. Unless I need overhead bin space, I always try to arrive at the gate 15-20 mins before departure, aka one of the last passengers to board. But CX frequently has boarding gate delays which aren't reported at the lounge or on the airport monitors. So you arrive at your gate to a huge mass of people lined up tensely waiting to board after the delay.
I could care less about boarding first to feel cool or special or DYKWIA. I don't think many people do, to be honest, even though it's a fun punchline here on FT.
I like knowing I'll have overhead bin space if I need it, and I also like avoiding the awkward tension during an unannounced gate delay (which is why I always try to arrive last unless I need bin space). If you're boarding a 3 class flight to the US, you can easily have 125+ passengers who are DM+OWE+GO+OWS+Biz entitled to the premium line, aka a third of the plane. It's a cluster I always try to avoid by boarding last....but can't predict it due to frequent unannounced boarding delays.
It's a small thing but to retain DM again and again is not a cheap feat. I think this is a small gesture towards improving DM ease of boarding (if they actually do as they say!). I hope CX can stick with this.

(77G - I swear to got someone put a 22-inch suitcase in row 23 - I was wondering who that in as hand baggage)
Fine but still - better than LCCs and FSCs with HBO fares like BA...?
Wouldn't you rather sit in the gate area and catch up on some wifi or 4G data? That's how I usually pass gate waiting time

The problem is you want to lug that heavy carry-on bag around the airport, not one airport but BOTH airports....just because George Clooney told you that you saves some time leaving your arrival airport by skipping baggage claim. In the end, you need to queue up to grab overhead baggage space with other passengers, is it worth it?
I will whisk around the airports with a slingbag with both my hands free. My carry-on bag is always check-in. I sit in the lounge and walk to the gate some 30 -20 min before departure. No queue, no fuss, no hassle, no worries......
People tell me that they do carry-on because of lost baggage experience. Well, I lost my bags twice and that was in the late 80s on some small US airlines.....we are now 2017, the system is almost foolproof.

The issue in the mini-cabin on 77H is that usually about 1/4 to 1/3 the space is for CX storage, usually bags of headsets. I don't recall them being there on shorthaul flights but they are always there on long-haul. Pretty sure it's the J class headsets.
Ha, mate you clearly aren't stuck on the lovely US flights. The most common departure area is still gates 3-4, which are roped off for the secondary screening. Seating is all full in there. The choice is sprawl out on the floor or stand in line. Last time that comes to mind was earlier this year to SFO on one of the 77G departures. Thought I went to the gate "late", only to find out we had a rolling boarding delay.

I'm not worried about my bag getting lost. I just don't feel justified standing around burning extra time waiting for a bag.
Totally lost about George Clooney??
