Note: in many cases there are shorter walks available to either nearby public transport that may be cheaper than the more expensive trains to the airport, or to nearby attractions. If you edit this wiki, please post those as well.

Airport - Notes (include time and a link to a google map route)
AGP - approx. 40 minutes from Holiday Inn Express, which is the nearest airport hotel
ANC - downtown 1h 20'
BOM - from domestic terminal to Ville Parle railway station (crowded on week-days, OK on week-ends) (20 mn)
BRE - center (45 min)
BRU - from Zaventem train station
CNX (Chiang Mai, Thailand) - 48 minutes from the far side of old town, less to near side
CPH - city center(1h30 min)
DAD (Da Nang, Vietnam) - one hour to the beach, 40 minutes to the center
DAL - downtown(2h) or take bus 524 for free to Inwood Station and then walk. Costs $2.50 TO DAL.

EDI - short walk to the nearby Hilton. Airport bus also stops across the street from Hilton and goes to centre of town
ETH - AIRPORT CLOSED
FUK - 45 minutes to Hakata Station

Ditto. I need to get from SYD to a friend's place in Coogee (and back) quite soon - I might get picked up but I might well not!

Exit the international terminal and walk past the carpark in arrivals. Cross the street to the path next to the river, then cross the bridge on the right side - so walk under it first then loop around. You should be walking towards the Mercure at this stage. Right off the bridge, turn right and cross the path into the park and follow it until you see Woolworths which is the supermarket. Keep walking to the roundabout and you should see the station entrance from there.

HOU - Houston Hobby

< 1 mile to the DoubleTree, a little over 1 mile to the Hampton, Holiday Inn, and others.

Yes, they all have free shuttles, but the walk is worth it for exercise and to get out.

There are paved sidewalks and protected crosswalks the entire way. I've seen flight crew making the trek.

Now for IAH, I believe it's at least one mile from Terminal A to Terminal D

Just don't take a wrong turn at night - much of the area north and west of HOU is less than safe after dark

At ICN you can walk to the Hyatt instead of using their free shuttle. You walk directly out and through some parking lots. You can see the hotel from the curb. Only difficulty would be crossing a busy street, where there's an elevated walkway which could be difficult with a lot of luggage.

Haven't seen this thread for a while...

Anyway, another one to add to the list for me - Leeds Bradford. Had some time to spare, so caught the train to Horsforth, and walked along the public footpaths through farm (with styles and paths of very variable quality) through the gentle hills to the airport. Took about an hour, and was a very pleasant way to pass the time.

CNX has been added to the list, with a gratuitous 25-minute detour to boot.

I was there a couple of years ago in spring, and that was a non starter for me

My last walk was from McTavish Exchange, North Saanich, BC, Canada to YYJ, a trip I've done before, as the express bus from downtown Victoria runs every half hour, while the little busset goes by the airport at sporratic times, and it's often faster to just walk.

And with very pleasant temperatures it's a quick half hour walk

I will admit that I didn't look through all of the thread entries but if it hasn't been mentioned yet, Myrtle Beach MYR is a very easy 20 minute walk to the ocean from the airport.

In jeans, no less!

Also, that wasn't as bad as my roundabout, 2.5-hour (albeit mostly unintentional) walk fdom DPS to the Intercontinental Jimbaran.

How is YYJ, by the by?

I was in the same situation as OP some years ago when I was still a student (and when I could still travel for leisure, thought it was adventurous and wasn't completely fed up with air travel. On the other hand, I was also a fan of Ryanair and their low budgets in those days). I walked a lot to and from airports.

A small overview:

- From NRN (Niederrhein, or Dusseldorf Weeze according to Ryanair) there is a shuttle bus service to Holland. However, as prices were sometimes more than double the prices of flights (20 euro for a single trip...), I decided to do things different. I took a bus to the middle of nowhere ('Sterrenbosch'), which runs between Venlo and Nijmegen in Holland and walked along the Weezerweg all the way to the airport. It's a 75 to 90 minute walk, but quite doable. And it cost just 1,5 euro on bus tickets. The only disadvantage is that there's no pavement for a few hundred meters along the road.

- Another favorite is the old airport in Qatar (DOH). When I arrived there at night most taxi drivers wanted me to pay a night's worth of taxi driving. I politely refused and walked to my hotel, which was quite close to the national museum. The walk was just 15 minutes or so. On arrival the hotel apologized for not informing me about their free shuttle service. They got to drive me to the airport on my way back, all the 3 minutes it took.

- I walked from Kuressaare in Estonia to the airport. The bus service would only cost me 50 cents, but the bus was scheduled to arrive only 20 minutes before departure. I assumed that, as with all flights in Europe, check in would close 30 minutes before departure. As taxis were nonexistent and I felt the need to show up on time, I decided to just walk there. It was just a 30 minute walk or so and quite nice. Turned out the airport was almost closed when I arrived and that most passengers didn't show up earlier than 15 minutes prior to departure. And everyone made it on board. I guess that's one of the advantages of having a tiny airport with just 2 small flights a day. I guess the same goes for Kardla, with the understanding that the airport is just over 1 hour from downtown.

- I once had to walk to Eindhoven Airport (EIN). There was a bus strike going on in the area, taxis were taking advantage by charging their most expensive fares and I was a student. It was a warm and humid day and the walk took about 90 minutes. It was quite an interesting walk though, along many areas of the city that I hadn't been before. But I still pity the person sitting next to me in my sweaty and probably stinking shirt. I think that's one of the disadvantages of walking to airports: it's easy to get quite sweaty, especially if you drag luggage along.

- I once considered a domestic flight in Israel from Tel Aviv to Eilat. Eilat Airport is literally in the center of the town. Then I remembered the stringent security control and dropped the whole plan.

- I once walked to DTM (Dortmund) from one of the train stations there. I booked a flight with W6 that left early in the morning and didn't want to spend money on a hotel or a taxi from Dortmund. So I decided to get a train ticket to Holzwickede and walk the 15 minutes to the airport. I was passed 3 or 4 times by a Wizzair-bus that advertised the same route by bus for 5 euro. I combined the experience with sleeping at the airport.

- I'm planning on walking from TOS to the center soon. It's a short walk according to the map and bus services are either expensive or nonexistent at the times I need them. Taxis in Norway make you go bankrupt by just looking at them. As I'll be visiting some friends later on, I decided I might just as well walk the 5 km (3 miles) to the city. Should take 1 hour.

- You can easily walk to the center of Tallinn from the airport: they even have road shields for pedestrians to get to the city. Just follow the signs to the parking lot and keep going straight. Then turn right at the main road and keep going straight. It's about 3 km or 2 miles. I so far preferred bus transportation. Up to 5 buses per hour and just 1,65 euro per ride.

- Genoa, Italy would have been very walkable. I found that out after buying a very expensive bus ticket and being dropped off at the train station after a 8 minute ride.

- Pisa would also be walkable. Found that out after waiting for a hour for the bus and just being on board for 5 minutes to get to the duomo and the famous tower....

- Bydgoszcz would be very walkable. It was only a 5 minute bus ride to the center. The only question is why on earth you'd want to go there...

- I think Warsaw (WAW) would be walkable from the palace of culture. I think it'd be 75 to 90 minutes. Question would be why you'd want to do that, as bus tickets are very cheap and buses go very often. Even taxis are not that expensive.

Talking about free transportation (but not walking): in Macau, just hop on any casino shuttle on arrival at the ferry terminal or airport. They'll drive you to their casino for free. Just pick a casino that's near your hotel.

I'd personally take a bus to downtown Nice. I found it a bit too far to walk to the de Medici road and around. Forget taxis. They'll want over 30 euro's. Bus is quite fast and reliable and drops you off just near the train station.

I've walked or threatened to walk in and out of airports a couple of times, at places mentioned up thread.

At Luang Prabang in 2004, numerous tuk tuk drivers at LPQ wanted the official airport fare to take Mrs. DCA-SEA and I to town. Being broke at the end of a long trip, we said we'd just walk. We were chased down by a driver at the end of the parking lot who took us for less than half.

At DPS just a couple of years ago, we saved some money by walking most of the way out of the airport to get a cab to Ubud.

At LIH, downtown Lihue and an island-style rental car place (cheap older cars, no shuttle) are about a mile from the terminal, so I walked out, picked up our car and went back to get Mrs. DCA-SEA and our bags. You could do the same thing at OGG or HNL.

I was walking from downtown Ely, Nevada out to Ely's airport after my car broke down there, to fly to Elko to pick up a truck to tow my car to Salt Lake. A Nevada Highway Patrol officer stopped and gave me a lift.

What a pitty, started to read and thought you flew into Germany, and walked to your destination in Holland to save money, that would have been something

BTW : it can be very windy around TOS airport, making walking rather unpleasant,I was born there,-well not in the airport, but close!

In Iceland, RKV, AEY and IFJ are all easily walkable to the city/town centres. GVA is also nice and convenient as well. BME in Western Australia is also one that is easy to walk to and from.
