BA have cancelled all flights to PKX (Beijing/Peking) and PVG (Shanghai Pu Dong) "until 19 April 2020".

BA frequency to HKG has been reduced with effect from 13 February 2020 - see below for further details. From HKG, Cathay is running a heavily reduced schedule to mainland destinations until the end of March.

If you are due to fly to PKX, PVG and your flight is cancelled then you have refund, re-route and rebook options. BA can rebook on to several other airlines.
If you are due to fly to Hong Kong until 1st April you have refund and rebook options.
If you are transiting into mainland China you are also covered as above.
If you are transiting internationally (e.g. LHR-HKG-SYD) you are not able to move your flights, unless they are cancelled anyway.
The latest ba.com update was on 21 February 2020 at 1510.

Whilst I’m not M , let me chime in - what “in house” etc... got to with anything? I am down to travel this weekend. Many here travel under their own steam - The WHO will take a view tomorrow.

I‘m in Beijing right now, due to travel back to Europe on BA from PKX on Friday.

I just received a travel advisory note from our internal travel risk department with the usual obvious things like wash your hands, stay away from markets & livestock, avoid obviously sick people etc. it also advises that this could cause delays, especially right now during the Chinese New Year travels.

No message at all from BA.

Personally I’m not to concerned at this stage. It is true that they’ve now demonstrated cases of human to human transmission, but the odds for me of catching it are pretty low outside of Wuhan.

That said we are probably still early in the developments.

I wouldn't worry about delays to/from PKX since it is operating at 5% of capacity.

Agree. When I landed I was literally the first person in the line at immigration. It’s a different story these days at PEK.

Also heading out there in a just over two weeks. Looks like we may be there around the same time. Largely unconcerned at the moment, but will continue to monitor the situation.

Am finding this advice very tricky and confusing to follow.

Have made a thread on the UK forum pleading for help about how to accomplish this (and why I’m asking). Would really appreciate advice!

Where to buy (and which exactly) N95 masks in the UK (need soon!)

Basic surgical masks are good for infected people as it stops the droplets from coughing. Whether they are truly effective to stop "receiving" the virus is a matter of debate. N95 are indeed more secure. And certainly never reuse a disposable mask.

This might be a dumb question, but why not go with the N100s? If N95 is good, wouldn't 100 be better?

I concur. It's easy for me to say as an armchair doctor with absolutely no experience and no forthcoming trips to China. However I went to the internet, found the latest UK Flu report and, in it, this particular table:

I go to HK in a couple of weeks and tagged a trip to PEK. Flying BA so will keep tabs on this thread.
If it gets any worse I will just stick to HK.

This is going OT for this particular thread....

In response to 13901, I don't have the UK influenza incidence figures to hand, but I think in the US, it's estimated that there are 10-40M cases of 'flu/ year, resulting in 10-50k deaths annually. That would put a case-fatality ratio of ~1/1000. By contrast, 2019-nCoV has an estimated case-fatality of 2+%, i.e. 1/50, which makes it 20-times 'more lethal' than 'flu....

That's why there's a fuss....

I don't know what officially BA was supposed to do but as a practical matter they didnt do anything in my case. I was flying ex China with a wicked flu during the height of SARS and they nicely gave me my own box of tissues.

OK, but... even SARS killed 800 people across the globe! I mean, you gotta be pretty damn unlucky to catch it.

While I personally rhino (and I have a biology background) that this entire scare is way overrated, I ended up flying back today instead of Friday from Beijing as several of my meetings got canceled, people prefer to stay home.

Let’s see what the true mortality rate of this thing is in a couple of weeks. As said above, regular stuff like flu and pneumonia kill thousands every year, mainly weaker patients like elderly or immuno-compromised.

The only thing is that this Friday with the Chinese new year starts the bigger travel season of China with hundreds of millions traveling, which may help spreading the new virus.

But I still plan to be back in Shanghai end of February and am not too concerned about this overall.

Perhaps this thread could stick with the BA impact, if any, of this latest outbreak, rather than discuss face mask efficacy or outbreak morbidity and mortality rates. If things deteriorate, FTers will need actual information etc.
