** AA Domestic First on two cabin will earn business TPs and avios for departures on or after 11 January 2017 - see reference posts for more details **

** Note that the practice of AA Domestic 3-class service flights booking into A for 210 TPs when I was no longer available ceased in September 2017. Discussion here. **

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Nest these together and you could have 4 x 40 = 160 TPs for £313, sleep in you own bed as LUX is good for back2back, and enjoy the T3 CX lounge experience
I have been looking at nesting some tickets for a TP run, but reading into it, like dropping the last leg, are not allowed. Do I heavily hamper my TP run should I nest tickets?

Nesting tickets is perfectly fine. BA have never indicated any problem with it.

Hi Karfa,

Thanks for the quick reply! I don’t know where I read that then. So to a novice at nesting, I do the following (for example):

Ticket 1: LHR-LUX 10/12/17
Ticket 2: LUX-LHR 10/12/17
Ticket 2: LHR-LUX 17/12/17
Ticket 1: LUX-LHR 17/12/17

I am surprised they do not have an issue with this given it being a cheap way to circumnavigate the minimum stay rule?

I remember reading something a few years ago about AA not liking it precisely because it circumvented the minimum stay, but BA has never given any indication of being bothered.

As Karfa mentioned, Luxembourg is well worth staying a night or two if you can move those dates a little. Taxis are expensive and the city itself is explored easily in a few hours, so hire a car at the airport and you'd be amazed how much is within a 2 hour radius - Germany (Roman city of Trier and the Moselle river); Shengen (triple point DE meets FR meets LUX) and Vianden (amazing castle) and Diekirch (WW2 museum and brewery) in Luxembourg; Belgium (Bouillon is amazing), Netherlands, France (Maginot Line, Rodemack, Metz, Nancy, even the Champagne area, countless castles and chateaus)

There's a fairly inexpensive NH hotel at the LUX airport too if you have an early flight.

Thanks for the advise! Do you think I could explore the city enough over a few day trips (morning flight out and evening one back allowing 8 hours between flights)? I’d like to avoid staying over to keep the Mrs happy. Still have to convince her that I ‘need’ to get to silver to ‘save’ us money on lounge access and seat reservations for circa 12 flights next summer

One trip would be enough to see Lux City itself. Have a look on Google maps - it's tiny and covers only a few blocks really. I'd struggle to spend more than a few hours there - the good stuff is within a 2 hour radius by car.

Simple solution - take Mrs RF with you, have a weekend of exploring and Christmas markets and a taste of the CX T3 and Lux lounges for next year's travel :-)

^ we have this planned at the end of November. Friday afternoon flight, so a visit to CX First, then rest of Friday and Saturday in Lux, followed by CE back to London

If you do need to do a back to back though it does involve going landside, but the airport is relatively small and efficient that it really isn’t an issue. Also when you exit security the lounge is on the same floor, don’t head down the escalators.
Do you know how long will the Lux fare be available for? Thanks!

The LUX fare (IM0V2R) is not a sale or promotional fare, therefore it does not include an end date. That being said, it can be withdrawn or re-priced at any time without warning.

Well I have always found Luxembourg a good place to go to, so long as you can get out of it asap, as you have suggested...

I have always found LUX to be a heavy-duty destination as the supermarket in Kirchberg (Ave JFK, on the way to the airport) is too good to resist.A strong suitcase and lots! of bubble wrap for the champagne.

My Gold will peter out at the end of December on 1440 into my next year (after Nov reset, LHR-KUL-SYD-KUL-LHR-AMS-LHR-BKK-KUL-TPE-KUL-BKK-HKG-LHR-AMS-LHR).

About the most elegant way I can think of from London is LBA return for about £200 but that would be ridiculous. Wiser to wait for 2018 unless I've missed something - I want a trip to Florida soon in WTP so that should bring the mojo back.

Whilst the Lux fare is easy, it will add up to be rather costly for my purpose of 0TP - 600TP to gain silver. I can't seem to price up the TLL/HEL fare. So for someone London based, but happy to start within the EU, can anyone come up with any creative or cheap ways to gain 600TP?
