** AA Domestic First on two cabin will earn business TPs and avios for departures on or after 11 January 2017 - see reference posts for more details **

** Note that the practice of AA Domestic 3-class service flights booking into A for 210 TPs when I was no longer available ceased in September 2017. Discussion here. **

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Oh I wished it was J as well... - you'd lucky to find anything via LHR under £1k in J. Cheapest thing would be the annual QR sale.

Hi All,

I've been reading through the thread with a combination of amazement and confusion, I'm as new to this as a schoolboy turning up on his first day of work experience at NASA on launch day.

I need to get to LAX for a few days for work (starting in UK), towards the end of this month (June) beginning of July (there is a degree of flexibility on dates),

As a novice I only have 245 TPs and the usual trip back and for would nett me 140 TP (so i'd get to bronze), is it worth considering adding a stop (or two) to potentially get me to silver? Direct flights are currently showing as £1.6k each way (in economy), so I guess that gives me a starting budget,

Is this possible? can anyone point me in a vague starting direction, or like the schoolboy, should I sit quietly in the corner, grunt occasionally and just think 'whatever'.

Thanks in advance

Ah, thanks. Seems to work on very specific dates only though, until it widens out in November. I need to take some holiday a bit earlier in July or August - I'm already away at the end of August.

Good find though, thanks!

Although ex-BGO I can see £855 earlier in August actually - I will investigate further!

140 TPs is in business class, although £1600 each way sounds like a business fare, rather than the economy you mention. You could do LHR-JFK-LAX one way, and say LAX-LHR direct coming back, in business that would get you 420 which with what you have already gets you Silver. That lets you pick seats and get you in the lounge, although the lounge is not important if you're a business traveller as you'd have that regardless.

Fare rules state that it's not permitted before 18th AUG 2017, in addition to surcharges for weekend departures hence why availability will be better in Sep-Dec (not including Christmas/New Year) and from Jan - Jun

Thanks Dougzz, I was hoping it was as simple as that.

The 140 points, (was for a flexible economy ticket), based on the first trip I made this year to LAX (fro LHR) - i think

Do you have to buy flex, you could travel in business which is much nicer for that sort of money. Most of my travel for work is Eurostar and short haul. I take the view if you waste a ticket every now and then, that's still cheaper than always buying flexibility you seldom use, but my plans don't change much.

Thanks,
I think the booking of flexible tickets at my end, is a case of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing,

The 140 points, was 70 each way.

Using your example of JFK, and going premium economy, I can only rack up 3 x 90 points, when I need 350 (to get to silver), so its probably not going to work, without splitting the homeward flight as well.

Splitting the home journey will obviously get you 4 flights, I was suggesting the outward only as flying west its easier, coming east you want the one hop long sleep kindest on the body version that a single flight offers. Have you looked at Matrix for options? A lot depends on your company travel policy, some specify a class, so they'll allow a £3K flexible economy ticket, but not a £2.8K business ticket without the flexibility.

Prices exDUB to the USA (East & West) in July/Aug seem to have dropped roughly €150 today.

Fare is ILN8S4T1 and is bookable on ba.com!

Anyone able to look up the fare details?
