London Heathrow
We have complied with a request from Heathrow Airport to reduce our flying schedule on Monday 28 October as a result of the severe forecast storms.

The airport has instructed all airlines using Heathrow to reduce their schedules in the following manner on Monday:
Between 0600 and 1100 a 20 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied
Between 1100 and 1600 a 10 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied
Between 1600 and 2230 a 5 per cent reduction in the schedule has been applied
All of the agreed cancellations are for our European and domestic flights at Heathrow, and these have been published.

All our long-haul flights into and out of London Heathrow are currently planned to operate as normal.

London Gatwick and London City
We currently plan to operate all flights to and from London Gatwick and London City airports as normal.

55 kts is 63 mph, so not far off 70mph.

On HEX now, having swapped from the Picadilly Line, after it was stopped at King's Cross due to trees on the line at Acton Town. As reported above, HEX appears to be working fine.

The TAF includes:-

TEMPO 2806/2808 27032G55KT ...
BECMG 2807/2810 27016G28KT

So it should hopefully all be over by lunchtime, bar the clearing up (reminding myself that local time at LHR is now the same as UTC / GMT so I don't need to convert it any more).

Still little more than a stiff breeze . The wall to wall news coverage of this 'hurricane' has been rather amusing viewing so far.

Yes, but the BBC were quoting 70mph at 0730 when in reality it was a lot less at that time at LHR and falling.

I remember the 1987 storm and the media comparisons with that are a bit ridiculous. As LTN Phobia said it's BBC scaremongering. I dread to think what the Daily Fail think it was like!

currently at Boston Manor waiting for tube to reopen. too much faffing around to reroute now. will worry about my flight (conformity is at 9.05) when I get to Heathrow.

... And they've just announced a Heathrow T5 tube will be coming along shortly. So line appears to be reopening.

I stepped off CX237 about an hour ago. We held over NE London for a good 40 mins or so, after which the captain announced that the last 5 or 6 LHR approaches had ended up going around, and if conditions didn't improve soon we'd be diverting to MAN. Fortunately we didn't have to, and although our approach into LHR was interesting it certainly doesn't rank amongst my top ten nail biters. Don't know how many flights did have to divert at the peak of it this morning?

Hope you made it. Its a pain when you are so close ( only 4-5 stops away ) .

Parts of West London seem to have got it quite bad. A house has been partially demolished in Hounslow and a tree that survived the 87 storm was brought down.

We haven't had even a light breeze in our part of Hampshire throughout the night. Our wind anemometer readings shows a gust of 13mph at 4am. Relieved and suprised.

JER overnight winds were steady 15-20 knots, with gusts to 40-45 at midnight and 0400. We were lucky - there are a lot of old trees here.

Yep, the fun starts here:

http://www.flightradar24.com/2013-10...:19/12x/BAW11J

BAW11J (777) from JFK was the first of a string to go around, followed by a Thai 744, an Air Canada 330, a BA 744, and another BA 777. The Sultan of Brunei's private 747 somehow manages to land, after which the Brunei 777 goes around, and an Etihad which was also in the sequence also goes around.

After that, nothing is sequenced behind the Etihad, and traffic already out of the holds that was positioning for the approach is (rather creatively) routed back to them, and ATC start filling the Bovingdon and Biggin holds up.

SQ 322, TG 910 and AC 856 all divert to Manchester, and there's nothing landing for about 20 minutes until DAL38 is positioned for the approach, followed by the Ethiad that had gone around earlier. They make it down fine, so it's a case of dealing with the backlog...

Interestingly, United chose to tactically run their 0600-0700 arrivals late from origin, to miss the worst of the carnage. This would mean they minimised their risk of go-around and/or divert, and rather than face London with lots of misconnects to re-accommodate, the passengers will have been re-booked or re-routed at point of origin, rather than on arrival at London. For all their other faults, UA's IRROP handling is proactive and mostly good.
