angatol Thank you very much for that info. That one post has been the single best information on how to use the matrix I have seen.^^^

I think there are lots of better guides out there!

This is well worth a read if you're interested in what Matrix is doing: http://www.demarcken.org/carl/papers...xity-notes.pdf.

This is a great thread, thanks for that!

I have two questions:
1) Does anybody know a good run ex-US to Europe? I am in LA and need to be in Germany on May 24th for a couple of days. Would love to fly J, but the fares are very high.

2) Has anyone have experiences with booking several segments, but using them only partly? For example, LAX-JFK-SJU costs around $500, LAX-JFK alone almost twice as much. What if I only fly to JFK and let the JFK-SJU segment expire? Without checked baggage, of course!

I'm sure most of you guys know this but, just in case some newer members don't, remember this:

The AA forum has a thread with a list of discount codes for travel on roundtrip flights to most US cities that AA services.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...12-onward.html

Admittedly these will work for round trips only so not helpful for multi-city itineraries (which I realise most tier point runs are) but they may be useful for positioning flights if using AA metal.

Even those of us who in theory know these things sometimes forget, so posting the information in this thread is a good idea. Thanks!

Hi All,

looking to do first proper long-haul real "manic" TP run this summer with two friends. Have only done simple stuff like AMS via JER from LGW before so please be kind.

Essentially looking for a long weekend type trip (Thursday to Monday/Tuesday), ex EU (not bothered but assume that's the cheapeast option), dont mind how crazy the routing is, earning as many TPs and miles a possible, ideally with at least one proper 'comfortable' segment each way (i.e. a long flight in a lie-flat or fully flat seat rather than all flights e.g. AA 757 including TATL) as cheap as possible (ideally no more than £1,500 or so). I have tried to play around with matrix a bit but struggling.

In an ideal world maybe staying a night or two in a nice destination (HNL / US West Coast / HKG etc) and/or a stop-over somewhere so it's not quite 4 days on planes (though that could be fun / acceptable with enough fully flat / lie flat elements).

Looking at July or August.

Anyone got any ideas that they've already looked into? Or would like to make a suggestion?

Many thanks - much appreciated.

Just out of interest, what's the shortest time you can sensibly squeeze the HNL TP run into?

I would check some of the routings on the wiki, but one of the business class shockers is the following:

BRU-MAD-LCY-JFK-LAX-HNL = 1280 TPs @ £1836 = £1.434/TP

The only drawback (in my mind) of some of these more audacious TP runs is the aggregate journey time; the total time to get to HNL on this route comes in at a whopping 51 hours 30 minutes!

In Matrix, you can adapt the brilliant search terms provided by angatol:

(The "f ..I7SALE" refers to the ex-EU business class sale running until 31 January.)

And do

From: BRU :: MAD LON BA1-4 JFK LAX / alliance oneworld;f ..I7SALE
Destination: HNL :: JFK BA1-4 LCY MAD / alliance oneworld;f ..I7SALE

I myself booked BRU-LHR-JFK-LAX-HNL for a late April departure, staying a week in HNL. Came in at £1706 for a modest 1060 TPs (=£1.609/TP). I don't have the stomach for those marathon runs.

What's the total journey time to HNL with your less insane slightly more straightforward if lower-TP-earning routing?

Stick a 23 hour connection at JFK and this journey becomes really easy-going.

The total outbound time on the connection-light routing is 26h. Still particularly heavy, but within the same ballpark as the shortest-possible 23h on the direct BRU-LHR-LAX routing, and not much worse than a kangaroo route haul.

Owning to unforeseen awards redemption difficulties we may be looking to purchase flights back to LON from either TYO or CTS around New Year 2014. Could the experts out there suggest any reasonable TP runs that we could take advantage of at the same time? We are a party of 3 adults + 1 child.

Any ideas on how to get some TPs out of this for under $1300?

20th June: BOS - HNL
26th June HNL - LAX

Thanks
