Actually, I don't think this is correct. I know there are varying interpretations here but to me it seems clear that you will only need 800TP in Feb 2015 but that will be the last time. You were Gold in March 2012 and so can retain at the lower levels for your next two membership years. In your case these are Feb 2013 to Feb 2014 then Feb 2014 to Feb 2015.
I have to do 3 runs to the USA per year. Luckily being ex-TLV, there are periodically some handy CW fare sales. With WT+ and UuA on the third trip, even 1,500 TPs is very doable for a spend of about $7,000.
When one does the maths in that way, it's under $5/£3 per TP, and seems much less unreasonable that they aligned non-UK people to the higher levels.

The real question is- how many do you need to earn during your year ending May 2014.

I think there is not a question that you will need to earn 1,500 TPs during the year ending May 2015. Even under the most favorable interpretation you will have had 2 years of renewal at the old levels prior to your May 2015 year end.
The real question is- how many do you need to earn during your year ending May 2014.

Another data point:
My year end is February, and I have just had very confident-sounding confirmation (from the GGL line, which supposedly is pretty reliable) that my requalification levels for my 2014-2015 year will *not* be at the old Euro levels. I was specifically told that - and this is a direct quote - "the two year grace period included the current membership year you were in in March 2012".

To retain Gold membership you need 800 Tier Points

Oh, no. Cue a bunch of whiners who will complain to BA saying "it's not fair!!!" Life isn't fair and competition is what BA is all about now. And they are doing a good job of it IMHO. ^

My page actually says I only need 2500 tier points to retain GGL. This is doubly odd - not only weren't the lower thresholds supposed to extend to this year, but they were also only supposed to cover requalification for people who were already at those levels before the changes happened. I've been GGL for less than a year.
I guess this is a case of a potentially unclear wording where the customer service reps have been given one interpretation and the people programming the computer systems have been given another. I still would not be surprised to see it magically change to 3000 in March, and those requalifying for gold seeing theirs magically change to 1500.

I'm really not sure why so many people are getting confused by this. As stated above:
If you were Gold in March 2012 you can retain at the lower levels for your next two membership years. In your case these are Feb 2013 to Feb 2014 then Feb 2014 to Feb 2015.

No matter how much you want it to be, the language really is not entirely unambiguous. And as stated above, BA customer service, even the GGL line, clearly have interpreted it the other way in the past.

However, neither of them are exactly well known for giving accurate and consistent information (although the GGL are certainly better)
