All the talk about Mastercard or Visa or any credit card Free LDW coverage, is just pure theory.

You have to actually use it and then you will realize that you do jump thru hoops in order to get the benefits.

There are items they dont cover - the Admin Fee is not covered, the loss of revenues is covered only in theory - it is very difficult to get it paid because the insurance company asks exact documentation which the rental car companies are reluctant to provide.

I have invoked a Mastercard coverage for hail storm damage in Yellowstone. All told, after 4 months, Mastercard paid $2,280 repair, refused to pay for loss of revenues claiming the docs submitted by Thrifty was unacceptable, Admin fee was not covered. We paid Thrifty $350 or around that. Had we bought the insurance, it was a measly $16 a day for 5 days. I would gladly pay that if I rent in an area where weather is totally unpredictable.

The AMEX coverage while it is duplicate, but it is money well-spent to rid oneself from all the hassels that would entail when you need to use the other credit card free coverage.

And now, may we discuss the LDW pro/con in a separate new thread, and return this thread back to Avis discount codes, please?

Isn't this also true of the Amex Premium Car Rental coverage? Evan! said that Amex did not cover the administrative fee, and I would be surprised if any credit-card insurance, whether free or paid, would pay for loss-of-use charges unless adequate documentation were provided.

Yes, if you're willing to pay the rental car company's daily LDW fee, you can avoid these hassles. But be aware that in some parts of the country, the LDW fees are very high. At MSY, for example, Avis charges $25.99/day for LDW.

Is this thread about discount codes or insurance?

If you will take a look at Post # 1457, you will see that this particular discussion was started in connection with a discount code that also provided insurance coverage. Then a reply was posted mentioning the Amex Premium coverage, and we were off to the races. For some of us, especially those who do not own a car, the insurance coverage provided by an AWD can be far more valuable than the discount off of the rental rate. (I used to rent almost exclusively from Avis because the Avis/AARP AWD once provided 100/300/25 liability insurance coverage at no extra charge. But alas, that is no longer the case.)

But I agree with Happy that the discussion about taking or declining LDW, Amex Premium coverage, etc., would best be continued (if at all) in a separate thread, especially since this topic is not limited to Avis rentals. I think that there was at least one such thread a while ago. Anyone want to start another one in TravelBuzz!?

Whose code is A153710?

OK, after searching through the entire thread, I believe it is a reincarnation of A153700 will all of the ensuing dangers. Has anyone successfully used this code in Europe without ID or the letter?

MUAA074 expired in 08.

I've been using MUAA133 for 5K bonus SkyMiles and AWD D005297 (convention/corp rate requiring no id) for great savings and 5,500 SMs with each rental. Minimum is 4 days for rental. Any AWD will work. Avis promotes using K817600 for a 25% discount but I have never had that AWD beat D005297.

You can find more on MUAA133 and MUAA132 (3 days) here.

# 2500 bonus miles valid on a qualifying rental of three consecutive days at participating Avis airport locations in the U.S. and Canada. Please mention coupon number MUAA132 to receive bonus miles offer.
# 5000 bonus miles valid on a qualifying rental of four consecutive days or more at participating Avis airport locations in the US and Canada. Please mention coupon number MUAA133 to receive bonus miles offer.
# Bonus miles offer valid on all car groups.
# An advance 24-hour reservation is required.
# Offer may not be used with any other coupon, promotion or offer except your AWD discount.
# The savings of up to 25% applies to the time and mileage charges only.
# Taxes, concession recovery fees, vehicle license recovery fee, customer facility charges ($10/contract in CA) and fuel charges are extra.
# Optional items such as LDW ($35.99/day or less except in Louisiana $49.99/day) and other surcharges may apply and are extra.
# Offer may not be used in conjunction with any other promotion or offer.

The Farmers Insurance code (A972200) only beat the Amateur Sports code (D005297) by 6% in DEN for next week. Still good but obviously not as good as in RDU. ;)

Has anyone ever had quoted Avis rates changed upwards as a result of the use of a coupon? I have an Entertainment Book code (TUGA019) on an upcoming Sat-Wed reservation; the coupon is for a free weekend day. The coupon was accepted online, and I meet the Saturday night keep requirement. However, the back of the coupon makes mention of weekend rentals ending on Monday and rentals kept beyond will incur a higher rate. If I recall, there is no mention on the coupon's face as just applying to "weekend rentals"; rather, the coupon is for a free weekend day.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Yeah, it happens. I've found that some of the codes here (Amateur Sports, Farmers Insurance, etc.) are actually better than using a free day coupon. As always, you just have to check each one individually to find the best fit.

Anyone have some good codes for SIN?

AA seems to work the best so far, but any coupons that would work for extra miles??

Well, if you have to deal with (some) grumpy taxi drivers who drive you in the most indirect routes, plus traveling with a family, it makes no sense to use taxis when one can drive and park exactly where one wants to go.

Have you ever seen the line for taxis outside Carrefour?

Nowadays with the economy down might be a different story, but I don't want to waste my time dealing with taxis when traveling with a family...

To answer my own question, LH's Miles & More is offering up to 2k miles, if booking from the .de (Avis) website...getting same rates as AA's code, if SEN/HON...

So with respect to the possibility of the rate being increased because of a coupon that was accepted online (regardless of the conflicting terms re: rental end date), I suppose I should just remove the coupon from the reservation rather than risk it.

Re: finding a better rate, the rental is out of LAS, and the best rates appear to be thru Delta.com (the source of my reservation). I will keep trying for a better base rate.

Thanks for your input.

Just an update - when I landed at SIN, Hertz decided to show me their "local" rates, which almost beat the Avis online codes...and then did *better* (10% off), giving a slight edge on the pricing, all-in, resulting in BD miles earned, rather than SPG or M&M....so went with Hertz got a slightly smaller vehicle, but not bad at all!

I know a lot of people have already asked this, but I was wondering if anyone can assure me that the Amateur Sports Assistance Program code actually works? We are going to FL this week and have a decent rate already reserved, but this code is promising almost 50% off the rates.

I don't want to risk losing my other reservation, though, if for some reason I was denied this one because of lack of ID. Would anyone suggest holding onto both reservations just in case?

Thanks so much!

Need monthly discount code - FL

I need to rent a car at FLL from April 11 to May 10. I tried searching on the word "monthly" in this thread but no matches were found. Anyone know of an AWD code, maybe even FL specific, for a discounted month-long rental?

Avis is my preferred company but I am open to others.

Thanks in advance.

Evan - I plugged in a bunch of my favorite codes for those dates and found that the best one was K817700 (Hyatt code). It's not specific to a monthly rental, but the rates were pretty good.

I also tried a few other companies with various codes and the absolute lowest rates I got were from Alamo using the Walmart code (ID 430710, code BY) but these only beat the Avis rates by about $15-$18 for the whole month.

I tried using this code for a rental at MCO from May 11th to 14th, but it didn't get me a better price than the Amex Platinum discount code.

Am I doing something wrong or are they both equally good discounts?

Probably the latter. Other airline codes (ie Delta) sometimes give the exact same discount as Southwest.

Who can assure you? It is a question without any logic when you really think about it.

Remember, even the code worked at picking up the car, rental car company could come back to change it if and when somehow they perform an audit AFTER rental. Rare, but happens.

If you are so worried, then have a back up reservation with another rental car company. In case this code does not work, walk right to your backup reservation counter.

I've been rummaging through this thread today and yesterday and am perplexed by the notion of free LDW on a corp AWD being a bonus...

On what planet is this anything but bad (unless of course you work for that corp)?

Whether it's G417900 (which consequently gives me the best rate for one day) or Citi or another with free LDW... when you get into an accident, who in their right mind thinks they'll be subject to the cap? Moreover, the company providing this incentive might still get involved, even if you say, 'no thanks - no worries, I'll just utilize my free Mastercard LDW coverage', and still sue you as contractually, this fender bender might count against their rate just the same and/or they may be obligated to pay in excess of the negotiated cap on damage to the vehicle. Now you're talking possibly implications to Mastercard/Visa/AMEX free LDW underwriting guidelines.

I just don't get it. The difference is $5 on my rate online and I'd glady use the discount w/o the LDW (i.e. perfectly comfortable with MasterInsurance (MC LDW as my primary as I only have liability through USAA), but to have that there just seems foreboding, definitely not reassuring...

You are overthinking way too much. I have been in 3 accidents with Avis cars, and to them, it's no big deal. Probably a daily occurance. In each case, I filled out the form, and never heard another thing from them. I'd imagine that most companies are too busy to spend time to police their auto rental users. In my humble opinion, the LDW cap is a huge bonus, because no matter who ends up paying, the maximum amount is capped at a reasonable amount. Many corporate contract with Avis are not limited strictly to employees. And in many cases the "employee" may be contracted, leased, loaned, independent sales rep, consultant, etc. I've been told by an Avis corporate business rep that they leave it up to each corporation to determine what qualifies as an employee. It makes sense. I'm sure Avis would prefer to get as many people as possible using Avis, as opposed to a competitor. If they take a few hits from "grey area" users, it's just a cost of doing business. Avis has reps out there soliciting these corporations for their business and competing with discount programs. Do you think they really care who uses the discount? I don't. Most of these AWD's are all about the same discount rate anyway (give or take a few bucks). They want the business and they don't care where it comes from.

Of course it's not big deal to Avis, I'm not talking about 'them' so 'they' being Avis, of course not.

'They' being the company (in this case Kellsport) who offers that discount to employees, yes I do. Is it not reasonable to suggest they could care, at their discretion, and the aforementioned could be a worse case scenario? Or do you portend that a $25,000 car being totaled with a 3k LDW cap does not affect Kellsport, at all?

One way to reassure my mind... tell me Bob, of these 3 accidents you were involved in, how many were under the umbrella of G417900's free LDW cap, and in these accidents, was there more than 3k in damages? If you answer is none and/or less than 3k, then it's not really a fair assessment of Kellsport and/or CC LDW's possible reaction..

hakujin Apr 16, 2009 10:53 am

C'mon Bob, I have a reservation to make!;)

[Edited by mod - removed references to deleted post]

I was [hoping you could] elaborate on your 3 accidents at Avis and how that relates to LDW cap since you brought it up. I gleaned (based off your lack of response) that each accident was less than 3k in damage; thus not invoking the KellSport LDW cap per se, and therefore not very helpful to better understanding the 'what-if'. If you did incur more than 3k in damages to the vehicle (even better if it's totaled), please advise! Someone is going to eat that excess cost beyond the cap, and if a customer misrepresents himself with a code they are ineligible to utilize, well... it doesn't take a rocket scientist for me to imagine how they may very well turn out. Perhaps Avis is less likely to care than say: KellSport, but I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of their contract with Avis... sufficed to say, there seems to be a risk to utilizing a service such as LDW cap that no one here has completely addressed yet. To complicate things, with MC or Visa LDW ins. there's so many little caveats of what will and will not be covered and I'm pretty sure if it came down to it, misrepresentation would be one of 'em. so I say 'buyer beware'.

K44404

I've been reading through the forums and with the exception of the one guy who picked up in Zurich (Avis' city office) and another person who picked up in Athens (not sure where), has anyone had recent (2009) success using the K444404 code in Europe? Specifically Austria? I have a reservation for the end of this month and am traveling with the wife and 6 month old.

I also found G298100 which offers equally good rates, only problem is my reservation is booked for this small Austrian airport and the model I have reserved is now sold out and rates have gone up considerably since I booked nearly 2 months go. So I am hesitant to call and switch the code if K444404 should not be used.

I have a back-up reservation, but again, much more expensive and not the model I requested.

Great info throughout the thread!

The D005297 AWD looks good and is giving great deals, but does it waive the underage fee? I guess I could call up Avis and ask, but if someone here knows that would be great. :)

AFAIK, there are no codes that waive the underage fee.
