As of 2/12/14: We've had quite a few "Hey, come use this AWD. It's great" type of posts. When the AWD doesn't give a good discount, but is only posted to try to get renters to use the AWD of someone so the poster can earn free days from their Avis Corporate account. From here out, please put the company/trade group/etc that's associated with the AWD or we'll delete the post to keep it on-topic here.

Congratulations! You found a "great code". You are one of the countless others who have masted the art of incrementing numbers and comparing prices. If we were to tell you that your code is for employees of Barclays Bank or alumni of Cambridge University, what difference would it make to you? We're assuming not an employee of Oxford or a Cambridge alumni, otherwise, you wouldn't be asking as you'd already know what the code you randomly stumbled over was for.
If you want to take a chance and use it, that's your business, but know that rental companies can and do ask for proof and they've been cracking down of late (an FT mod just PM'ed us yesterday about two instances in the last few weeks where they and someone they know was challenged).
Will you be asked for ID if you are a loyalty member and skip the counter? Less of a chance of that, but sometimes your name is not on the board and you need to go to the counter. Or, if you have an issue with the rental (like you get into an accident) and they have cause to look into whether you were eligible to use the discount code provided, it may be problematic. Or maybe it won't.
We're not here to preach to anyone about what they should or shouldn't do, but like most things in life where you are doing something that is unauthorized, there may be consequences.
Safe travels!

I know they require winter tires in Italy, do they not require them in France or Switzerland?

I drove skiing to La Plagne in France, bought snowchains for around 30 euros in the big supermarket next to Gare de Aime train station, just before climbing up the hill to the resort. Don't remember the name, there is Decathlon and the petrol station there, hard to miss. However, managed to drive almost all the way to the chalet without snowchains kept them in the boot in case of major snowfall or something. Europcar offered me to rent snowchains from them for 100+ euros for 14 days which I declined.
