I kept getting insistent emails about showing ID on my upcoming Avis reservation at CHS, and from what I can see they don't have Select & Go, so I decided to forego the risk and book with my real corporate code at Hertz (only about $50 more). I see people saying they have backup reservations, don't rental companies charge fees for no shows in the event your Avis reservation works without hassle?

Generally the major companies don't charge no-show fees unless they inform you up-front that a credit card guarantee is required.

But when you make a reservation you usually do it under your account which has a credit card on your profile that they can charge a no-show fee to, correct? For example, on Hertz website it shows they charge a $130 no-show fee for US reservations. Am I interpreting that correctly?

It depends. Regardless of whether you are logged into your account, there are some pay later reservations that require a credit card guarantee (not common), while most others do not. If you make a reservation that does not explicitly say it requires a credit card guarantee, then there is no penalty if you no show.

To reiterate, we are talking about pay later reservations--not prepaid reservations, which typically entice you with a lower rate but do have cancellation penalties.

If you are seeing a pay-later reservation that says it had a $130 cancellation penalty, then please post a screenshot as we'd be curious to see it.

Ok got it, thanks guys. Guess I'll keep both an Avis and a Hertz reservation just in case I have issues with my Avis AWD

cgwhs Jun 14, 2021 9:37 am

hey guys, so first time Avis Preferred customer, and I'm picking up a car at an airport location with Select and Go, will I still have to stop at the counter? or will they just check my license on the way out? i saw in my reservation confirmation email that i might have to still stop at the counter. since it's my first time, not super sure what the process looks like, any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

I also plan on using one of these codes at Malpensa. I'm debating whether to rent at Malpensa or in downtown Milan since the airport charges like $200 more in fees for a one month rental.

Is there a way to decline the automatically included insurance coverage with these rates and use my CC coverage instead?
