I plan on cancelling it when my AF posts in a few months, but I'll MS the $15k FNC first. I have the Aspire, so the card does absolutely nothing for me besides taking up a credit card slot.
YMMV, but I get great value out of that card. With my business and MS side hustle I can get 6x on $60K spend. When all done I have 360K points and 2 free night certs. For $95 that is a steal. With Covid “perks” this year the cert are good for everyday of the week for 2 years.

Only spending $15K also makes sense for me. I get 90K points and a FNC. Minimum of 2 nights for nights for $95. Can’t really beat that.

I checked this thread and saw that a few months back, a couple members reported retention offers of 60,000 Marriott points with no spend on the Marriott Brilliant AMEX. I was not so fortunate, perhaps because they have now rolled out the dining credit. I was given three offers:
  1. $75 credit after $1K spend in 3 months OR
  2. $100 credit after $1.25K spend in 3 months OR
  3. 20K points with no spend, to be posted in 8 to 12 weeks
I took the 20K points. The card has to remain open for 12 more months or the points will be clawed back.

Amex green

Mar 1, 2021. Amex personal green card. 15000 MR, no spend requirement. Over 50k across all amex cards in 2020. Barely any spend on green card.

Pretty sure offers are based on spending across all amex cards and not the specific card you are calling about.

Amex Gold (opened 10/2018). Previous retention bonus 11/2019. Offered 30k MR points, no spend required … accepted. $1k-1.5k spend/month, all organic.

I've received several successful retention offers via secure chat on a desktop. I always have the same script ... that I'm "considering cancelling card XYZ (account ending in #####) and wanted to see if there were any retention offers on the card." If you're looking for retention offers, it has to be done during business hours during the work week, as that's when the department in charge of the offers is available via chat.

The sequence of events is always the same ... when the initial agent sees the question, he/she always transfers you the retention department. The retention department agent will ask why you're considering cancelling, and I always state the high annual fee. The agent goes through your spending, the benefits of the card, and asks if you think the benefits make the card worthwhile. I then state that the high annual fee still makes the card difficult to keep and ask if there were any retention offers on the card (and yes, I use the term "retention offers"). If there are any offers, the agent will go through them. They may have both statement credit and MR offers, and may not offer the choice initially. I've had to ask "are there any MR offers instead of statement credit offers" to receive a MR offer. They have access to all retention offers given to you in the past, so no secrets there either.

I got a rock

Amex Platinum (personal).
Account open for more than 20 years with annual spend >$30,000 until travel ground to a halt in 2020.
2020 spend was around $12,000.
Used chat function in app. Disappointed (and honestly rather shocked) to receive NO offer.
I also have the Business Platinum and will be cancelling that one, as I can't justify both platinum cards with no travel likely till Q4.

Although disappointing, the bank's software pegged that account correctly as a keeper (with or without incentives).
Perhaps they would try to retain your Business Plat account.

You are undoubtedly right, they know me too well. It was interesting though - this morning when I opened my account online, there was a popup offer for 20,000 points if I added the Pay Over Time option to the account.

We'll see what they say when I cancel the Business Platinum, but unlikely to take it. The main reason I opened the Business Platinum card was the 35% points rebate on airfare booked with points.
Plus, they recently sent me an offer for 100,000 points to open a Business Platinum card to "pair with the personal Platinum", so better to close this one now and then see what type of offers appear next year when I'm traveling again.

What offers do you look for as your preferred option?

They’ve had somewhat comparable statement credit and MR options for me in the past (e.g. $300 statement credit vs. 30k MR points). I value MR points higher in these instances since I have the Schwab Platinum and can cash out MR at 1.25 cents per point if desired (I realize MR can be worth far more in travel, but at a bare minimum 30k MR points = $375 with the Schwab Platinum ... which is obviously more than $300).

I tried your method by chat on Platinum Delta. No transfer just the same response. I did check this for you ,however there shows no retention offers on the card.

Retention offers and reports from 2020 have been archived: American Express retention offers (2020)

I did not copy the summary retention offer reports from the 2020 Wikipost to this thread, but this can easily be done by me, or by anyone who has the credentials to edit a Wikipost.

I have the feeling that CC companies are seeing the uptick in the business cycle, and the expectation at least that at a minimum domestic PERSONAL travel is going to pickup rather significantly in the coming few months and into the summer, so the days of high retention offers - other than the usual may be on somewhat of a pause and wait and see basis.
