Pretty bad change for my use case. I'd probably hit that spend organically but prefer to use my Amex Gold for restaurants. Additionally, the $25 credit works for restaurants worldwide but the 3x multiplier only applies to US restaurants. Will strongly consider cancelling.

This card was already potentially on the chopping block at next fee time, but this change seals it. Though looks like I may get lucky with the timing, since my anniversary date is in August, so may be able to squeeze one last $300 credit out of it before it changes.

I will cancel or downgrade the card in 2023. This year however, my card renews in July, and I generally use the credit in August, so I will be able to double dip.

Long term I probably should get the Chase card so I can free up one Amex spot. Need to wait until I am under 5/24.

Mine renewed in December so I am going to double dip and to see if I can fish for a retention offer. Otherwise downgrade to AMEX $95 or cancel.

Yes, that limitation makes the coupon book unattractive to me. YMMV

Yep I'll downgrade when my AF comes due next spring. When it was one or two and done with credit it was worth it to me for the 50k cert. But I don't need yet another Amex coupon book to track. I want to hold a personal card though for elite nights along with my business card. So back to the $95 AF card for me.

They will with the Hilton version of the card. I guess you can read this thread to look for data points. The intent was for you to spend it, not cash it out.

to the extent that the claw back is automatic, it would’ve happened by now.

My fee posted end of May and I paid it - I will use the 300 next month July at Marriott - IF down grade the next month Aug. will they claw back the 300?
ALSO
terms say "American Express notes that you may not receive the statement credit if the transaction was made at a restaurant within another establishment (e.g., a restaurant inside a hotel, casino, or event venue). In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet, through a third party, or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it."

I live in Europe most of the year and most restaurants I go to, the waiter comes with a portable devise to slip my card into to pay the bill --ASSUME this is wireless card reader ?? if so
One more reason to cancel

They’re just covering themselves. That means charges that say Marriott are fine. But Sq*Marriott or PP*Marriott aren’t, if they use something like Square or PayPal to process charges. Pretty rare when you’re at a real Marriott.

This card isn’t a good fit if you don’t actually ever stay at Marriotts.

Statement Credit Status When Charge Reduced? (Marriott Card)

I burned through the $300 annual Marriott statement credit in my first month with the Marriott Brilliant card. My Marriott spend that month on the card was at least $400. Now a hotel is returning $30 of the credit to me, due to an overcharge.

Q: will Amex automatically apply that $30 to remaining prior Marriott spend on the card, issuing a new credit in that amount? If not, will Customer Service do it manually? Or do I have to incur new Marriott spend to make us of the $30?

Thanks...

I had a $100 off $500 offer on this card that expired tomorrow, June 30 (from AMEX; I believe it was specific to the luxury hotel brands). I hadn't used the $300 hotel credit. Yesterday, I drove to Ritz Laguna Niguel as I knew they carried gift cards in their gift shop. I have bought successfully there before and knew they would code as a hotel purchase. The rebates stacked and I already have $400 credit on my $500 purchase.

Does anyone know whether pre-paying for a hotel stay on Marriott.com with the Bonvoy Brilliant card will trigger the $300?

The Pre-pay rate is much cheaper than the Flexible rate.

Or do I have to physically swipe the card at the property?

Thanks!
