Reminder: you must enroll and select Southwest as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase.
Some have suggested the need to wait several hours or even a day before making the purchase, but there are also several DPs that worked without waiting that long.
(BTW, you will often hear people refer to Southwest as WN. WN is the IATA code for Southwest Airlines. SW is the IATA code for Air Namibia.)
Caution: As of late July 2019, reports are that direct gift card purchases are no longer being reimbursed.
To purchase click here: https://www.southwest.com/gift-card/create-card.html Caution: Do NOT login to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account when making the purchase.
What does appear to work is buying flight tickets less than $100, OR using gift cards to get the charged amount down to less than $100.
Always read the last few pages to get up-to-date DPs.

This won't work. Since if you cancel, the charge never posts to your CC, it only shows pending and eventually disappears, but AMEX will not credit anything that doesn't post. So you can try, but 99.9% confident it won't post and therefore you won't get any credit.

I'm not sure how it works on Amex per se, but on Citi/Mastercard statements I generally see all the flight details per traveler, and then their fare (or taxes if a points redemption). Same is true for me on for other banks and Visa. Sometimes if I'm using travel bank / credits for the tax part (or vouchers for airfares) I won't have anything on a card at all, which means I'm not going to have any card based travel insurance in place.

Similar charges (cancelled within minutes) did post and got refunded in the past, but they were from JetBlue and paid with Barclays MC.

Amex Platinum success:
Bought $100 gc on 6/25, a second $100 gc on 6/26. No reimbursement.
Bought a ticket that was $166.98. Split payment w/ AMEX & one $100 gc then bought a return flight in a separate transaction that was $186.98. I used the other $100 gc, balance on Amex.
Today I was credited $66.98 and $86.98.

Just attempted a WN purchase using partial GC, travel funds, and Hilton Aspire Amex as follows. Will report back in a couple of days.
Fare for One Way ticket: 160.98
Southwest LUV Voucher: -100.00
Residual GC Amount (originally purchased by HA Amex and not reimbursed) : -13.02
Amount charged to HA Amex: -47.96
If things go as planned I should expect a reimbursement of $47.96, correct?

Didn’t work yet :(
I’ll give it some time. But based on other folks and their comments- my GC posted 7/5. It’s now 7/11 and no credit posted.

Does anyone know if this will work for upgrades from C+ to First? Officially no, but I'm curious about the reality
