Please wait a few days (up to 14) after purchase to post in this thread if you have not received reimbursement. Remember, you are purchasing a cash equivalent!

http://hub.aa.com/en/ju/komen-gift-card

Or alternatively put in the code KOMEN when you check out

to donate $5/$50 GC to Susan G. Komen for the Cure;

http://hub.aa.com/en/ju/uso-gift-card to donate to the USO;

or to donate to UNCF:
http://hub.aa.com/en/ju/american-air...uncf-gift-card

NOTE: Online gift cards are sent immediately but are subject to a 72-hour hold before they can be used.

American Airlines Gift Cards are easy to redeem on AA.com. If you received a plastic gift card and you're ready to redeem your gift card, be sure to gently scratch off the grey film covering the four-digit PIN # on the back of the card. If you received a virtual card you may retrieve your Card # and PIN # by clicking on the link sent to you via email.

On the payment screen, enter both the Card # and PIN # exactly as they appear on the back of the gift card. You may use up to eight gift cards at one time. If the total price of the ticket exceeds the value of your gift card(s), you may use a credit card for any remaining balance.

The gift cards can only be used to purchase tickets, nothing else.

Terms:
Gift cards are redeemable toward the initial electronic ticket purchase of air travel wholly on flights operated by American Airlines and American Eagle carriers for itineraries sold and originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. AA Gift Cards are also available for payment of air travel on any oneworld partner codeshare flights designated in flight listings as AA*, which includes US Airways operated flights. For a complete list of American Airlines codeshare partners as well as other codeshare information, visit www.aa.com/codeshare. They cannot be used for payment of air travel on any other airline. Flights sold or originating outside the U.S., Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands or operated by other carriers are not eligible.

Gift cards are redeemable online at www.aa.com or by calling American Airlines Reservations. Gift cards cannot be redeemed at airport ticket counters or travel agents. Transactions through American Airlines Reservations are subject to an additional charge which must be paid separately by credit, debit or charge card.

Up to eight Gift Cards may be redeemed in a single transaction or purchase.

If the ticket price is greater than the value of the Gift Card(s), the difference may be paid only with a credit, debit or charge card with a billing address in the U.S., Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands. If the ticket price is less than the value of the Gift Card(s), the unused portion will remain on the gift card until it is decreased to zero, at which time the Gift Card will be deactivated.

Gift cards are redeemable toward the purchase of the base air fare and directly associated taxes, fees and charges that are collected as part of the fare calculation. Gift cards may not be used for products and/or services that are sold separately, such as upgrades; Admirals Club membership enrollments or One-Day Passes; baggage fees; pet fees; unaccompanied minor fees; oxygen fees; Preferred Seats charges; ticketing fees for transactions processed through American Airlines Reservations; taxes, fees or charges payable in connection with AAdvantage award travel; American Airlines Vacations℠ or non-flight products and/or services sold by American Airlines.

Gift cards will not be accepted if the card number is invalid, has not been activated, or cannot be found within the American Airlines system.

General
Neither American Airlines nor US Airways Gift Cards have an expiration date nor lose their value over time.

Lost, stolen or damaged Gift Cards will not be replaced.

Customers may contact American Airlines for questions or help with their AA Gift Cards at [email protected]. Agents are also available by phone Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm (Central Time) at 800-677-9555. Customers may contact US Airways for questions or help with their US Gift Cards by calling 800-428-4322.

Gift Cards purchased from sources other than American Airlines and participating retailers may not be valid or may have less redeemable value than promised by an unauthorized seller. American Airlines is not responsible for honoring invalid gift cards or values.
American Airlines reserves the right to deactivate or reject any Gift Cards issued or procured, directly or indirectly, in connection with fraudulent actions, unless prohibited by law.

Regarding New Jersey Residents Current and Former:

AA's system will not sell gift cards to anyone with New Jersey info in their AMEX profile (and possibly AA profile). Your purchase will usually appear to go through, but when you try to activate the card a few days later it will be invalid.

You need to either choose another airline for this reimbursement, or cleanse your AMEX profile of NJ addresses and phone numbers, and possibly your AA profile as well.

See post 1115 for first details of this.

Reminder: you must enroll and select AA as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. Click HERE. REPORTS OF AMEX NOT ALLOWING CREDIT IF NOT SELECTED PRIOR.

Purchase cards HERE
.

The American Express terms and conditions explicitly exclude gift cards from the $200 fee reimbursement benefit:
Airline tickets, upgrades, mileage points purchases, mileage points transfer fees, gift cards, duty free purchases, and award tickets are not deemed to be incidental fees.
However, there are numerous reports of successful reimbursements of gift card purchases of $100 face value or less. There are numerous reports of unsuccessful reimbursements of gift cards purchases of more than $100.

Please wait a few days (up to 14) after purchase to post in this thread if you have not received reimbursement. Remember, you are purchasing a cash equivalent!

Post 1126 proves to be current, regarding NJ residents. YMMV, until there are more DP's.

No. In fact I would register and wait 24-48 hrs before purchasing. I purchased right after I registered and it was no reimbursed. The purchases I made a few days later were reimbursed though.

I guess I'll go the AA gift card route. I just switched my AMEX Gold Card over to Platinum last night to try and get this promotion. I do love having the Platinum card though; but downgraded awhile back when I wasn't travelling that much.

They told me to call back in on Sunday to pick my airline (that's the day they consolidate things or something). I fly DL mostly, so will pick AA (my second choice). AA sounds the best for the GC's too.

So I should wait a few days after I call in to choose the airline before actually booking the first GC? I'm thinking of going with $100 twice, a few days apart.

How late can you actually buy something and still get the credit? (it doesn't matter it won't make a 2012 statement?) By buying the GC's next Wednesday it's getting a bit tight!

They told me I could change the airline in January. So if I switch to DL, use a mileage ticket, they will cover the taxes and extra charges up to $200? I'm also getting 25K extra in Membership Rewards, so what a deal. I'll probably keep the card for awhile, at least until next fall.

The only enrollment you can't do online is your complimentary Starwood Gold status, you have to call the 800 number. Have your Plat #, your SPG #, SPG email address, & your address available. Amex will verify your plat #, then will transfer to their SPG desk, tell them you are good, and they will take the rest of the above info and make you SPG Gold.

The car rental benefits, and Priority Pass Select can also be enrolled online.

BTW, I have one of those from my Hilton Surpass card, but I have to pay to use that one (it's a black card, that says "Select" on it too).

Also, she said something about calling on Sunday, because that's the day they set these things up (or something like that).

I tried the online form, but they haven't converted my Gold->Platinum yet (I just did it last night)... so it didn't work. I still see the Gold Card icon in my Amex online account.

Don't remember if I have an SPG card or not, I think my husband does. Guess I should sign up! (I've been Hiltonized, so don't usually go to Sheratons these days). OTOH, perks are nice.

Thanks for the info.

Oh, and when I was asking all the questions with the agent, I told her she could sign me up for the upgrade from Gold to Platinum. Then when it came to the 25K Membership Rewards bonus, she told me I had to make a 10K spend in 5 months. I said that was a bit excessive. Turns out the offer in my Amex online account was 25K upon first purchase, so I ended up upgrading online. There was no way I was going to do a 10K spend. I also didn't want another credit pull; I overdid it this year with new cards.

Having status in program "A" could give you a leg up for getting a status match or challenge in a preferred (similar) program "B".

Then again, you may find yourself in a place where a Sheraton is your only reasonable option. Might be nice to have the status.

online here: http://www.aa.com/i18n/productsGifts...false&from=Nav

The previous person said they bought virtual gift cards and it worked.

Just like anything else here at flyertalk, YMMV.

So I'm going to wait until next week to buy the two gift cards, for $100 each, different days.

I do have a copy of the confirmation of enrollment. But I still have that "Sunday" thing in my mind so I'll just give it a few days to jell.

Thanks!

Here's the terms:

Statement Credits: Incidental air travel fees must be charged on the enrolled Card account for the benefit to apply. Incidental air travel fees must be separate charges from airline ticket charges. Fees not charged by the Card member's airline of choice (e.g. wireless internet and fees incurred with airline alliance partners) do not qualify for statement credits. Airline tickets, upgrades, mileage points purchases, mileage points transfer fees, gift cards, duty free purchases, and award tickets are not deemed to be incidental fees. The airline must submit the incidental air travel fees under the appropriate merchant code, industry code, or required service or product identifier for the charge to be identified. Purchases made by both the Basic and Additional Card members on the enrolled Card account are eligible for statement credits.
Now they do say they don't cover gift cards, but well, I imagine it depends on how it's coded to them, since people seem to get them for $100 or under amounts. They also mention they don't cover award tickets, but haven't some people said they paid for taxes and fuel surcharges on award tickets?

My card is the only Platinum one, but I have two AU's that will still keep their gold card (within the same account). For next year, can they use their cards to charge incidental fees, even tho their cards are gold? I think I was told it was $300 each to add Platinum to the AU's. Also, I'm not sure if they are going to charge me for the AU's now (the Gold card I had, there was no extra charge for authorized users). I'll drop them if there is. Plus my husband has a Gold already, I'd rather just bump his own Gold up to Platinum then just add on to mine for $300-- that's a bit pricey. Didn't it used to be $150?

I want to buy 4 x plastic gift cards. Can anyone confirm this will get reimbursed even though the total purchase will be over $200 at once (due to s&h charges)?
thx

VERY risky. I would advise separate transactions or using electronic gift cards.

on the $50+ gift cards, can you use all 4 of them later on when you buy one ticket? Or is it one to a ticket?
