Summary: $400 statement credit to stay on another year with AMEX Platinum after inquiring about cancelling the account.

Detail:

Just got off the phone with AMEX Platinum. $99,500 spend last year. $6-10k per month spend this year. Mostly overseas business travel. Renewal comes up 16 Nov.

During the electronic voice asking what I wanted to do I said "Cancel Card" was asked a confirmation, "You would like to cancel the card?" My answer was yes.

When connected to retention staff told them I was in a quandry on what to do with this card as I recently got a Citi Prestige and have pretty much stopped spending on AMEX. I enumerated a couple of AMEX Plat vs. Citi Prestige plusses and minuses. I said I can't see putting another $450 in for another year.

He looked at my account and said that it looks like I stopped spending in August so that must be when I got the CitiPrestige. He came right out of the gate and asked "Since you've been a great customer, would you stay if we give you a $400 customer loyalty credit? That way you can spend some time and compare the two cards. The real test will come when you are abroad and if you end up needing some help when you are traveling." Based on what I have seen on this thread that sounded like a good offer so I said sure, I'll stick around.

EDIT: That's the one thing I cannot fault AMEX, customer service has always been fantastic. I've had good experience with Citi the past couple of months, but not for anything where I have been in a real pickle. So for the next year or so I'll keep both the Platinum and Prestige in my wallet.

I tried to cancel online chat and they were ready to cancel.
I told them I will call in. When I called, I got referred to a Business Gold charge card.
I currently have Delta Plat business card with a fairly small limit. Last year when I called to cancel, I was given 25K miles and I accepted. This year, nothing so far. I told them I needed to think about it. They would not waive the fees nor did they offer any miles. Renewal was on Oct 23. Probably will cancel if nothing is offered. Last year I had about $35K in spend and YTD I have over $52K in spend.

100$ annual fee for 10k amex points?

Hi there I'm new to collecting points, I've collected and used the last couple years, now my annual fee is coming up and I was going to cancel and AMEX offered me to stay by giving me 10k points. Is it worth it? Feed back is much appreciated!

Well it depends on your travel. I get about 2.5cpp value when I travel internationally on coach. You can get more if you want to travel business or first. At the very least 10k points is worth a $100 gift card to someplace.

Welcome to Flyertalk. In which country is your American Express card issued, what type of points does it earn, and how do you typically redeem them?

I'm in Canada, its the Amex Gold card, it collects AMEX points which can be transferred 1 for 1 for aeroplan which is what I use to fly. Redeeming them has to be done in multiples of 1k to transfer amex points to aeroplan.

My wife just canceled Business Starwood. Offered zilch.
We did not have much activity on it, and to make things worse, AF was charged on last month's statement and somehow we didn't know about until this month, when a late fee of $35 and interest was charged.

Perhaps should've asked for late fee reversal first. Also am wondering if the AF will be prorated.

I have an Everyday Preferred with just over $50K spend in the past 12 months. I called after the annual fee hit yesterday, and was offered a choice of (i) an immediate $75 statement credit, or (ii) 2,500 MR points immediately + 5,000 MR points upon $1,000 spend within 60 days.

i received that same offer a few weeks back, after being told they didn't have a retention bonus for the EDP product. the 2.5K points posted the next day, and the 5K points posted pretty quickly after i made spend, and notably before account was paid^
