Ah so it was actually from this thread. Someone had claimed they could change the designated airline at any time, but others chimed in and it appears you can do it in December for the following year. So it's permanent for a given year.

If you haven't been reimbursed in this year, you can change your airline. But once you got reimbursed, you can't.

When in doubt, read the terms which are published here:
American Express practice is often more lenient than the policy. If you have not earned any reimbursement in calendar 2011 there is no harm asking to change, but there is no assurance the request will be granted.
Card members who have already selected a qualifying airline will not be able to change their choice until December of each calendar year at which time they may change their airline choice for the following calendar year. Card members who do not change their airline selection will remain with their current airline.

I've just been approved for an AMEX Platinum card and I'm curious about one aspect of the $200 airline credit. In the terms and conditions, it indicates that this credit is issued by calendar year. Does this mean I'm able to get $200 back before the end of 2011 and another $200 in early 2012?
Thanks.
Yes. Some people signed up at the end of 2010, got the $200 credit in the last month, then got more in January of 2011.

That's very interesting. I got my card beginning of Jan this year and was charged the annual fee on 1/14/11. I plan on canceling the card since I don't have much travel planned next year (and can't use the airline lounge benefit) and received the card with 100K bonus. I wonder if my annual fee for next year is charged the same date, maybe 1/14/12, can I charged $200 in airline credits on 1/1/12, get reimbursed within a few days (which seems to be the case), then close the account before I get hit with the annual fee?

Thanks Henry82 for posting.
Enrolled online for Alaska Airlines yesterday evening. Is there a waiting period to do the spending for reimbursement?

AMEX Plat Airline Fee Reimbursement
I purchased a OW ticket about a week ago on my Amex plat for $135, and today I noticed Amex credited the $135 to my account for fee reimbursement. I thought this was only for incidental charges ? Did I miss something ?

There are regular reports that Amex will do this for cheap tix (~$100/150 or so), even though the benefit is advertised as being for incidental charges. Really nice customer service on their part. ^

Waiting period?
Does anyone know if there is a waiting period between designating your airline and a reimbursement going through? I've got to make a couple of purchases on DL -- miles, and award fees -- and I designated them as my airline earlier today. Is that cutting it too close? I'm assuming that, even if the miles purchase doesn't credit, the award travel fees will?
