oneworld nonstop flights between USA and Australia are operated by American Airlines / AA and Qantas / QF. US gateways include DFW, JFK, LAX, SFO. Australia gateways include BNE, MEL, SYD.
Alternatives include using Hawaiian / HA from HNL, Fiji Airways / FJ from Los Angeles / LAX or SFO via NAN or Air Tahiti Nui / TN via PPT. (QF codeshares on Jetstar are no longer bookable as AA awards). You must route direct or South Pacific; awards via Asia, or transatlantic require two awards. Premium Economy services may not be booked with AAdvantage miles yet.
Awards using HA / Hawaiian Airlines require two awards, and one may not use HA between the mainland and Hawaii.
Only MileSAAver Awards are available on AA partners.
The usual award rules regarding Maximum Permitted Miles (MPM) and unconstructed origin-destination routings sold by the prevailing carrier apply.
Qantas releases awards ~355 days out; AA can not book anything beyond 331 days out. Qantas awards are challenging to secure. AA MileSAAver flights seem to be scarce on the LAX-SYD routing, even when aircraft go out with empty seats. AAnytime awards can be used on AA, but dynamic pricing may see those for as much as 225,000 miles one way in First.
Note: there are fees involved in award changes from oneworld airlines to non-oneworld partners or vice versa.
See here for current AA redemption charts.

Many threads on this topic.
USA <---->Australia business class awards are one of the hardest to get. An award in ~6 to 8 weeks time (short notice) even harder. 2 people on the same flight harder again.
Hard but may not be impossible. At times availability can increase close in.
What ffp's are you currently a signed up member of?
If you look only at LAX SYD you are restricting your options a lot, and then some. Look at SFO, IAH & DFW and BNE MEL. BNE can have better availability than other airports. Domestic USA & Australia flights as needed
Via Asia is the other option, but would be 2 awards. BKK, HKG, TPE, SIN, NRT, HND and others. Due to political unrest some HKG flights have low loads
They do not need to fly the same airline/ffp/routes/airports out & back. Look for one ways.
AA ff miles cannot be used to upgrade QF flights. Anyway upgrades, with any airline on the USA Aust routes are hard.

AA & UA also fly LAX-AKL. Then a 3:30hr flight across to Aust.
Via Fiji or on TN can work

(Business Class) Award Tickets to Australia
Does anyone know why business class award tickets on AA seem to jump from 175k (saver) to about double on October 1st (anytime)? In September there is lots of availability for saver business class award tickets but after October 1 there seems to only be anytime. Is this a seasonal thing or are the saver award tickets only released N months in advance? Etc ...
Delta seems to be the same.
I was able to find one award via QF for MEL-LAX(-SFO) for 80k in Business for 11/1 and jumped on it but it looks like I will be buying a BOS-HNL-AKL ticket on Hawaiian unless something changes in the next couple of weeks. (I need to fly between 10/21 and 11/1 and am actually trying to get to NZ / WLG / CHC / etc. but am willing to buying AUS-NZ tickets etc. I was able to fly in July for 175k from BOS to SYD.

The school summer break will typically be December to early February. There will typically be a semester break (two weeks) in early October. If you are looking at the last week of October, that should not be affected by Australian holidays.

LAX to AKL was no better.
The AA Platinum Premier line was unable to find anything for less than 375k one way on a partner airline.
At this point I'm thinking of just paying for BOS-HNL-AKL on Hawaiian (and crediting the lines to Jet Blue if necessary).

AA Award Booking Help (to Australia)
Hello,
I am somewhat new to award fare booking. I am currently looking into booking an award flight to Brisbane. According to awardhacker and the dates and times I am looking to go I can book for around 80k AA points. I currently have 60k AA miles and 20k BA Avios. I do not believe these programs can be combined but is there any way to include the use of the Avios when booking these flights as I believe they are partner airlines? If there is a better way to take I am open to suggestions. Thanks !

There is no way to combine AA miles and Avios (of any flavor) in a single booking.
What you can do, however, is book using the AA miles into another Australian city (Sydney, for example) and then use the Avios to make a separate booking onward to Brisbane. Note this only works if an award to the other city is available for 60k AA miles, and I think the floor for USA -> Australia is 80k.

When?
As above, you effectively cannot merge ff miles/avios/points into 1 freq flyer program.
Awards are one way, so you can mix & match.
To/from HNL or NAN may be option. AA has some non Oneworld partners. FJ is now a OW connect ff partner
The cash cost of domestic flights in Australia can be reasonable (or expensive)

I am assuming that you are traveling from the US to Australia? Or are you originating from elsewhere? Do you have a timeframe?
We will probably end up merging this into one of the threads devoted to redeeming miles between the US and Australia; many of the questions have more than likely already been answered.

- More award availability restricted by married segments / connections
- AAdvantage MileSAAver: “Through Award Fares”, a New (March 2019)
AA use a zone based system, so no difference in cost compared to LAX-SYD etc
BA use a distance-segment based system for awards.
On Qantas BNE others have reported better availability compared to SYD.
June July is mid winter in Australia, so less demand. Some airlines will have a reduced schedule
Good luck. Keep checking on award availability/routes
