You got me. What about the night of July 18-19 makes it "tonight of all nights" and "highly suspicious"?

Another gallows humor meme. Best of luck to those caught in this aviation mess...

It seams that AA is bouncing back from this the fastest of the US3. They've had hundreds more planes in the air than the others according to FR24.

Oldest underlying IT architecture?

The irony here is that there would have been no problem were a carrier using archaic legacy Sabre without modern front ends.

Flight for my weekend trip cancelled today about four hours before takeoff with usual insane non-updates beforehand (flight was on time even though incoming flight was coming in six hours after takeoff) rebooked for tomorrow which did not work. Cancellation was easy enough and flight credit is now in my account.

They share the Commodore 64 in Arlington with WN?

Yes, they definitely are. Had some flights on DL today, but cancelled and re-booked onto AA. DLs app was bricked for me through ~2 ET along with inaccurate departure times. UAs gates looked pretty hectic at BOS.

Alaska is effected

I assure you AK Air is effected. We had 6 guests from 5 states try to leave Anchorage yesterday. 5 are stranded, all over the country after multiple delays and cancelations all night. My 86 year old MIL is back here sleeping after we dropped her at the airport at 10 PM for her midnight direct flight to ORD. She boarded at 12:00 sat on the runway for 2 hours and then the flight was delayed every hour all night and finally canceled at 6 AM and rebooked for SUNDAY. And, not direct but stopping in Juneau and Seattle.
I was able to use the AK AIr chat and get her changed to a flight Sunday with just one stop in Juneau.
Our guests had flights for Friday early and no one is looking at being home at least until Sunday night.

One of the AA pax in London affected. Was meant to fly Saturday to JFK on the morning flight but got changed to multiple departures up till 4am and finally after a series of texts settled with 9am on Sunday. Looks like most of the later flights today (Saturday) left, no doubt with passengers delayed from Friday. What disgusts me is the hotel price gouging, the additional night at the same hotel was doubled because of the number of passengers requiring accommodation.

I'm on AA 783 this afternoon. I've been seeing constant tail number changes, I just had a barrage of delays, first to 4pm, then to 1157pm, then to 6am and finally to 7am tomorrow. Clearly, they're not fully back to normal operation.

UPDATE: AA agent said it's due to aircraft maintenance. I'm not sure I believe that as they changed the tail number like 3 times in the last 24 hours, but it is what it is. EXP Agent said he couldn't offer vouches and suggested I go to the airport today and wait in that horrendous customer service line. Hard pass on that...

Why was AA spared?

I usually fly United but had a flight from MKE to DCA on Friday morning without real incident - a 10 minute flight delay - however -

- The line for regular checking in was going around the block, but I cut through to the priority line which was zippy enough.
- Some AA agent came over to the priority line and gave us misinformation about about the desk agents not being able to check bags and that we'd have to go back through to the other line. One guy believed her and went all the way back to the other line but ended up cutting it so he didn't wait too much longer than if he'd stayed. We knew the agent wasn't right because we were watching desk agents checking luggage right in front of us.

Anyway, it seems United was hit pretty hard but AA wasn't, and I was wondering why.

AA was hit plenty hard, I just arrived at my home airport 24 hours after my original scheduled flight. And No, I am not wondering "how much compensation am I owed?"

You should be. AA is definitely asking the CIA CrowdStrike that question.
