So I called last week to have our PNRs connected, with the option to disconnect if there was only 1 seat available. I was cleared at T-24 for one of the flights, yet she wasn't. When I checked on EF, there was still 1J seat for sale. When I called AA customer service, I was told one seat is reserved for sale and not available for upgrade, so they split the PNRs. Across the course of the day, I saw 3 more seats open up for sale. This morning when she checked in, she was #1 on list for 4 seats available. I called back, and had the agent again reconnect the PNRs. And now a few hours later, she is #1 for only 1 seat available. Why wasn't she upgraded at the time there were 4 seats available, since I was??!!

Sounds like they only released one "upgrade R" fare when you were upgraded and were waiting for last minute purchases/paid upgrades (which it looks like people took) before releasing the last/remaining seats for upgrades.

Hello,

I have booked 3 basic economy tickets from Outbound - Houston to DFW and DFW to CDG and Inbound - Nice to PHL and PHL Houston. I am AA platinum. Can I request to be put on upgrade list with miles and cash for all 3 passengers on international segments only or is BE fare excluded from it?

AA customer service said they can only put 2 [people on upgrade list and I explained to him that I am not asking for domestic but international segment only.

I am already getting cash upgrade offers for all segments through AA app.

DCA-CLE on Wednesday at 735am. Upgrade was confirmed first thing on Sunday morning, apparently 73 hours in advance. I'm PP with ~180k LPs over the last year, and ~67k for this loyalty year.

CLE-DCA, Friday at 230pm. Was #2 on the waitlist with 4 spots, cleared the upgrade at the Gate.

While waiting to board IAH-DFW yesterday I was #2 out of 36 for 0 seats. I was standing there in the zone 1 line getting ready to board with others. Next to me in line was a couple and the husband says to the wife "go up and ask about upgrades". She did and comes back a few minutes later "looks like we're 35 and 36 on an upgrade list so I don't think it looks good".

:D

I tend to think it's not the switch to LPs but rather the monetization of the cabin. All the carriers are actively selling first now. It's not just AA. I think this is having a bigger impact on upgrade availability than status.

I have many coworkers with no status whatsoever who take the buy-up offers immediately after our CTA books their flights. It's now known even to infrequent travelers that this can be done quite easily and often (though not always of course) for a reasonable price.

I’ve seen the same and I’ve actually encouraged co-workers to take the competitive offers (when we are not on the same flights :D). Paying $58 or $97 to sit in F beats 32E for 2-3 hours as they’d have to pay for half decent Y seats anyway.

I also think the more passive flyers (non road-warriors) are crowding right around the thresholds (for example 200-275k for EP). I have zero statistics on this, but that’s my guess.

4/9 on upgrade list, no one cleared. Only had 8 seats in first, all were fully booked 10 days out.
PLT, with rolling 90k LP

Was flying IAH-DFW last Friday as a PLT in MCE and, just before boarding I was #9 for 1 seat in F. Imagine my surprise when, after boarding was completed, the GA came to my seat and asked if I'd like to sit in 4F! Don't know how that happened,
but I took it.

On 2956 CLT-LAX tomorrow. Equipment just changed from a 321Neo to a 772, so will be interesting to see how many clear. Currently the entire rear cabin of biz/first looks to be open. Imagine that there will be a lot of happy folks who get upgraded at the airport….

ORD-STL

Thursday evening, 9:00 p.m. or so.

I was booked on a paid First class ticket, and my partner was on a paid Y fare. Added them to the list at the AC, and they slotted in at #2 on the list with 2 seats remaining in First. Cleared at the gate.

I'm EP with approx. 200,000 rolling LPS.

When did AA start flying Business Class seats on this route?

So the OP was talking about his fare code, not the fact he was flying FC....

I edited the post for clarity. It’s true though that full fare, 2-cabin domestic first class is fare bucket J.

It might be true, however, its best to just say FC.

If one says they have booked J, and gives the route they are flying, the experienced flyer will know whether or not that's sold as first class or business class.
