AA agents have occasionally allowed passengers with booked travel wishing to cancel because of Coronavirus concerns to cancel without fees, but this is not AA official policy. Possible reasons:
Events, meetings, etc. you were to attend have been cancelled due to Coronavirus concerns, so your trip would be in vain.
You have documentable health conditions that your doctor feels are sufficient to cancel travel plans.

No reason to be stuck with an AA voucher when it may well turn out that some other carrier offers a better price, routing, or frequency.
Thank you! And I didn't have to wait long as our flight from Madrid to CLT has disappeared this morning so I am about to call to request a full refund. Great advice!

UPDATE: This may help others in a similar situation. I got through straight away and our flights were cancelled. The ticket numbers were confirmed to me and I was advised to go to prefunds.aa.com to request separate refunds for each of us. Seemed OK until it came up with a summary of the refund where it showed just £15.xx for "ticket exchange". (The routing of our trip had been changed a while ago). Luckily I was able to get right back to another agent who told me this was some sort of glitch and confirmed the full amount would be refunded (amounting to a number of thousand £££s)! A nasty few moments but very grateful for the great service AA are offering right now.

Thanks; I called to cancel last night and there was some confusion as I had received a partial voucher from the last time I cancelled this flight. I really have no idea whether I have an additional voucher or a refund coming but I am sure I will find out soon.

it's been 4 days since I submitted the refund request on https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/

however, as of today, the status still says "pending review".....

I do realize that they have millions of of passengers requesting refunds right now... just wondering how long it usually takes to be processed?

Thanks!

If only AA had offered me the chance to extend the ticket validity and rebook me for Aug, I would have simply paid the fare difference and we’d be golden. They wouldn’t, hence me going the refund route and I’ve already paid for the Aug flights.
As an update to my earlier post, my refund was processed last night and is showing that status in prefunds and I also received an email informing me of the status change. So in my case, 15 business days.

No sign of the refund on my credit card yet and no sign of the upgrade miles being credited to my account. The downside to the refund is that it will go to my Citi executive elite card that has a zero balance and isn’t used any more and the account will be getting closed shortly unless AA/Citi come up with an extension/pro rated renewal fee.

I'm still confused as hell as to what my options are. I have a trip I booked in February and was supposed to take next week to the UK. If I cancel and take the voucher and the "bonus" value they're adding how long do I have to reticket and start my travel? If I have to start travel within a year of the original ticketing? If so that's no an option for me because I don't want to take my vacation in the winter. I read a couple posts earlier in this thread saying they extended the start travel by six months and if that's the case I'm fine with taking the voucher. Also I assume since I paid extra for MCE seating that the amount I paid will be included in the voucher or at least refunded?

Hi all,

If one has rebooked travel due to a flight cancellation (I.e.flight cancelled... took the voucher and used it for rebooking; or just changed it on the phone with an agent immediately), then what happens if those new flights are cancelled by the airline, or altered due to a flight schedule change by the airline? I note that the wording states that only one change is permitted but I don’t know if this is superseded by the usual cancellation and flight schedule change issues which would usually allow me to cancel for a refund, rebook for another date, or rebook for same date.

any ideas?

Edit

Thank you for the info! I see AA actually called me earlier today and left a message while I was getting ready to do some Easter things. Now I have an idea what to expect when I call them back later tonight.

I'm pretty confident that actions taken by AA in your example (a 2nd cancellation) would constitute a "new" scenario where new remedies would apply.

Called AA back last night had no wait even as a lead tier status holder. AAgent was great refunded the domestic flight that I thought I'd have to argue over instantly but had some issues with my international flight. After talking to another agent who he said was "dead wrong" he elevated to a supervisor who took all off three minutes to approve the refund. Total time on the phone was 30 minutes but the rep was great and got the refund submitted for me. Now to figure out how to get my seat selection fees from both AA and BA refunded.

The original form of payment for your new ticket is a voucher and thus your refund would be to a voucher.

I also had an easy call with an exceptional rep on last Sunday. I had 3 trips to cancel for April, including 1 with a miles upgrade for me and my companion. As Platinum Pro, I had zero call wait time and was told immediately since my trips had been changed to add more than 90 minutes I was eligible for a refund. The agent, walked me through the process and I received confirmation within a day, that my refund was approved. I don't have the credit yet, but was told to expect 10-15 days.

One thing that I had to go back to do was request my miles reinstated separately and that happened within 5 days plus the $150 was credited. That was handled easily via Twitter Direct Messaging.

On another note, I received a status email extending me to January 2022.
