The primary cardmember may earn 5,000 Elite Qualifying Miles ("EQMs") after spending $20,000 in Net Purchases that post to the AAdvantage Aviator Silver account from January 1st through December 31st each calendar year. The easiest way to think about miles is that you have two categories of them: redeemable and elite qualifying. Redeemable are able to be used for miles, elite qualifying are only for gaining status.
When you fly, miles count for redeemable and elite qualifying.... you don't earn double miles, you only earn one set of miles that count for two different things. When you use your credit card, dine out, etc., the miles count for only redeemable miles.
On the section that says you will earn "additional" EQM's, 5/10k of the miles you earned will be credited to the elite qualifying miles. They are not true "additional" miles because they were already counted as redeemable miles.... they are "additional" EQM's because they are only counted against gaining status.
Hopefully that helps!

AAdvantage now recognizes Aviator users
After logging in, the AA home page now says AAdvantage Aviator cardmember between my status and mileage balance. I'd already confirmed that the accounts were linked when I redeemed miles and got the 10% credit, but it's nice to finally see it in print.

Question re: Aviator pin activation
I hope this is the correct forum for this question.
Leaving tomorrow for Europe. Aviator came in mail yesterday evening. Pin did not arrive under separate cover today and mail delivery is now stopped. Instructions say if you reset the pin, you need to have first use at a chip terminal with cashier or attendant. So, I reset my pin online and drove to Wal-Mart (over 30 miles RT). Made small purchase using chip card inserted in terminal. Receipt printed but it states **No Signature Required**. Apparently because I did not spend a certain threshold amount.
Question - will this now activate the pin for use in unattended kiosk overseas?
Asking because I called Barclay Customer Disservice (actually got a guy in Maine instead of the Phillipines) and he INSISTED that the card will not work in unattended terminal until I activate it at an attended terminal in the country I visit. I challenged this, reading instructions that came with the card, but he was REALLY insistent that he was right.
Realize chip+pin may not always work in unattended kiosk, but is what he told me accurate or total BS?

Sounds like BS to me. Once you do an online transaction with the chip, it should now have the new PIN programmed. AFAIK, the PIN isn't country-specific.

I used a terminal in Wal-Mart that you insert the card into and leave it there until the register transaction is completed. But I assume that's what you meant. Yeah, I didn't think the PIN was country-specific either, but you should have heard this guy!

Well, my upgrade date came and went without any fanfare. According to the printed letter, I'm receiving all of the benefits now that my I'm in a new billing cycle. However, I have not received a new card, nor has the Aviator Red image (when logged into my account) changed to Silver. I haven't yet booked any travel-related items that would earn bonuses, but my hotel stay a few days before my last statement closed posted as 1x (which is as the mailed letter stated but the opposite of the official email).

Aviator Red baggage benefit
I'm using my miles to fly some friends to Vegas. I get a free checked bag for myself and up to 4 traveling companions with my Aviator Red. But, I will not be on their reservation. Will they get a free checked bag?
Would they Aviator really know that I'm not flying? Or is the free checked bag benefit only attached to my frequent flyer #?

The free checked bag is tied to your AAdvantage number. So, if you don't travel, your friends will not get any of the AAdvantage Aviator benefits.

How long has it been since your upgrade took effect? I'm wondering if maybe they wait until after the 30-day cancellation period to mail the card.

So even though I have to log on to my AA account and book the flights from that account, that won't be enough to secure them free checked bags?
