2018 Program Year Elite Status Buyback / Renew / Boost (as of EOY 2017)
"Grace" for those close to completing status requirements has not been offered since AA began the buyback / renew / boost program.
In previous years, AA (and US) have offered those who failed to requalify for elite status the opportunity to buy back or "boost" status for the following status year. That offer was extended for the 2017 programme year, and the 2018 offering is be discussed here. E-mails have gone out to many members (16 Nov) with tailored offers. I’m honestly surprised though. I could see them just generating the buy back offer at a point in time and you either take it or leave it.

This ranks way on up there as "deal of the century". Essentially they're selling status for less than half the cost of flying the miles. You should jump all over this, before AA changes their mind.

My mother, current Gold with 954 EQD and 3755 EQM, also has this offer, which I'm guessing is targeted at current elites who AA suspects will not requalify for any status. But I can't see how it would be worth it for anyone not planning on traveling more frequently on AA next year.

I forgot to write down my initial offer to both Gold and Platinum before my Aviator Red MQD bonus hit my account.
Now that I am at 43K EQM and $5865 EQD, the offer for Platinum is $895... even though I have a HKG-LAX flight coming up soon that will push me over the Platinum thresholds on both.

is buying status considered an "exception" and counts to 2 max within 5 years if one wants to do challenge? Personally not travelling much, just marginal benefits of status, such as Flagship lounge visit when departing in coach, access to Cathay Pacific Heathrow lounge, but then again only when flying to a handful destinations in coach from Terminal 3, and no 75$ close-in fee while redeeming miles. How many times I would need to redeem miles to justify 1300$ fee??!!
Champagne is always nice but then I could be drinking Krug or Dom for that price without needing to sit in a metal tube

My wife, a Plat, has 4,744 EQD, 36,287 EQM and go an offer of $1299. Elite status has been of minimal utility for her (usually flies biz) so I couldnt see taking this offer.
My kids are all within spitting distance of Gold (over EQDs and about 22k EQMs) and got offers of $395 which isnt a bad deal except they have a paid J flight that will give 3x EQM and would make them plats under a challenge if I wanted to spend the money.
