Boeing 787-9 (789): Discussion of 787-9 AA as of 6 Oct 2016

22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were ordered in total by American Airlines.

Related threads:

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Best Business (B/E Super Diamond) Seat, Service (master thd)

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Coach, MCE & Premium Economy Seat, Service (master thd)

Retaining the wingspan of the 787-8, the 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 20 feet (6.1 m) longer fuselage and a 54,500 pounds (24,700 kg) higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW), seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range. Link to Wikipedia article.
Seating in the 787-9 "out of the box" will comprise
  1. 30 Business class seats

  2. 21 Premium Economy seats

  3. 234 economy seats (207 Main Cabin, 27 Main Cabin Extra)
...we learned that American would be installing the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat on their (~half the 772 fleet) 777-200, A350, and 787 aircraft going forward. These are the same types of business class seats as on Air Canada, China Airlines, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, etc. (EXCEPT the AA seats will not offer privacy dividers for the Center pair of seats) Link to One Mile at a Time article
B/E Aerospace will provide the Premium Economy seating (possibly a version of their Millennium seat); extendable leg and footrests for bulkhead seats, foot pegs for the rest.

AA will receive an additional 10 787-9s in 2017 and will receive the final 8 in 2018. AA has ordered a total of 22 787-9s to complement its 20 787-8s. These will have the General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Its actually going to be a while before these aircraft really start to show up en masse as AA is taking its final three 787-8s in February and March. It won't be until next summer where they'll be plenty of these aircraft flying around the system.

Cheers.
I see few similarities except for the 3-3-3 Y configuration. In J, UA has 2-2-2 compared to AA's 1-2-1, plus AA's W is 2-3-2 while UA's Y+ is still 3-3-3.

Just saw this post on Airline Reporter dated 7/7:
http://www.airlinereporter.com/2016/...cabin-details/

The first 787-9 flight with pax is scheduled for DFW-LAX on 10/6. Can anyone confirm this? I checked on AA.com and that date does have a 787-9 service departing DFW 7:25a for LAX.

Correct, I personally don't get the comparison either.

There's no real doubt about the intended inaugural dates at this point,as you point out, the seat maps are loaded. As to if-- particularly for the domestic first flight-- there are chances of it changing (as it seems kinda "tight" in terms of delivery, etc.,) I'd speculate those chances might be slightly greater than average, but nothing but pure conjecture on my part.

789 vs 772 seat map

The Seat Map I posted above is a 772, retrofit only used to indicate the rear-seat display on the seat map.

This is the 789 Business Cabin:

Is it unusual that Main Cabin seats are not selectable on the DFW-LAX runs in October?

It's a glitch; here is a thread on the inaugural that will help fill in details:

The 787-9 was just loaded a few hours ago - and AA's weak IT has failed. Give them a few days and it will probably be fixed.

Well, other than being completely different (AA and UA), the rest is the same

I guess looking at AC might be a better idea...

Cheers.

Not arguing with you - AA confirms that there will be no walk-up bar - but why would AA not install this popular feature on the 787-9s?

For winter break I'll be in Argentina and Chile. I love the 787-8 so I had planned to fly down in J via GRU from LAX. Last night I took at look at the scheduled and they changed the equipment to a 772... my heart sunk.

Woke up this morning and AA had changed my flight to SFO - DFW - GRU. ^^^
I'm very excited now I will be able to try out this new plane.

I don't care about the walkup bar, as none of the items never appealed to me, I'm always ringing the button for ice water.

About seating, I preferred the rear facing seats for long haul over night as your head faced away from the isle, a little bummed the 787-9 does not offer this.

Look at the seat map. If AA gives access to the pax seated in W it will work. The walk-up bar on the 788 and 77W is located in the J cabin, not so on the 789.

Some bean counter at AA convincing Doug that they could add more seats to the 787-9 if the walk up bar were removed. Incidentally, the "low J" 772 and the 789 will have roughly the same amount of seats with the "low J" 772 having a few more seats in J/W.

Booked a RT DFW-MAD-LIS flight in late JAN 2017 a few weeks ago. The AC change occurred as expected overnight and our seats were moved to row 12 this morning whilst the seat map was blocked. Just rechecked our reservation and we (EXP and PLT) are now seated in PE row 9 without any intervention on our part.

I think DFW GRU is the 77W.
