Boeing 787-9 (789): Discussion of 787-9 AA as of 6 Oct 2016

22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were ordered in total by American Airlines.

Related threads:

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Best Business (B/E Super Diamond) Seat, Service (master thd)

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Coach, MCE & Premium Economy Seat, Service (master thd)

Retaining the wingspan of the 787-8, the 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 20 feet (6.1 m) longer fuselage and a 54,500 pounds (24,700 kg) higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW), seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range. Link to Wikipedia article.
Seating in the 787-9 "out of the box" will comprise
  1. 30 Business class seats

  2. 21 Premium Economy seats

  3. 234 economy seats (207 Main Cabin, 27 Main Cabin Extra)
...we learned that American would be installing the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat on their (~half the 772 fleet) 777-200, A350, and 787 aircraft going forward. These are the same types of business class seats as on Air Canada, China Airlines, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, etc. (EXCEPT the AA seats will not offer privacy dividers for the Center pair of seats) Link to One Mile at a Time article
B/E Aerospace will provide the Premium Economy seating (possibly a version of their Millennium seat); extendable leg and footrests for bulkhead seats, foot pegs for the rest.

AA will receive an additional 10 787-9s in 2017 and will receive the final 8 in 2018. AA has ordered a total of 22 787-9s to complement its 20 787-8s. These will have the General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Its actually going to be a while before these aircraft really start to show up en masse as AA is taking its final three 787-8s in February and March. It won't be until next summer where they'll be plenty of these aircraft flying around the system.

I might be doing that route somewhat regularly. Was really impressed by J seat in 77W to SYD. Being 6'5" I'm not too excited about worse/smaller J seat in 788.
As stated in other threads (and the Wikipost) the seats will be the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat in Business, given Zodiac had their contract cancelled for their "Concept D" Business Suite product (used in ~1/2 the 772 fleet and in the 787-8 fleet).

The Super Diamond - and the B/E seats for PEY and Y - will be used in the 787-9 and A350.

There's no question in my mind - Premium Economy is a separate class of service, as it is on BA, CX, QF, etc.

More info on the 787-9, new business class seat, and new PE as of 9am CT today:
  • PE is "out of the box" (as someone above put it) on the 789
  • First routes are to MAD and GRU starting Nov 4, bookable July 10
  • Cabin is 30J/21W/234Y (including 27 in MCE)

What's not included: Inaugural and subsequent flights will be DFW-LAX.

I penned (keyed?) a post for AirlineReporter with more details:

There's more to how PE will be handled than just SWUs. I'm curious how it will be priced...

The PE landing page has been updated. https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/...um-economy.jsp

PE is essentially treated as MCE for now... EXPs/PLTs can select the seats for free, GLDs for 50% of fee (whatever that fee is) 24 hours before departure. Full PE service will be provided to MAD/GRU.

The change into the full separate cabin won't happen until 2017. The not-so-great bit is:
"Upgrades from Main Cabin to Premium Economy won't be available right away, but we'll add this functionality later. Until then, you’ll be able to upgrade to Business Class from both Main Cabin and Premium Economy."

... which probably hints to most of your worst fears... future upgrades will be Y>W.

At least during the interim, this is a nice break! In the long run, I'm pretty sure AA will join one world in how they handle upgrades. But this does offer more options, and it will be interesting to see how the pricing will evolve.

B787-9 routes announced

"Beginning November 4th, flights from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to and from Sao Paulo (GRU) and Madrid (MAD) will feature Premium Economy on our newest Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the 787-9.

Boeing 787-9 flights will be available for booking July 10th."

So much for my DFW-MAD flights in J in December which I thought would be in the reconfig B777.

Also Premium Economy. C availability for DFW-MAD dried up about a month ago, when F stopped being sold. So may be credence to SWUs going from Y to PY and not Y to J .

Booked J award on the 777 with my better half for DFW-MAD on 27NOV, mostly because it was the only way I could figure out how to get mile sAAver to Europe when I was shopping back in January.

I'm definitely pleased that the NGBC era 777 is being swapped out.

Since tickets will be available for purchase on 10JUL, does that mean the aircraft will be swapped in the system this weekend (I assume a Saturday schedule dump)? I want to be able to go in and (re-)select our seats once the maps are updated.

Yes, I assume so. I have a DFW-GRU award on the second day of service (bummer to have just missed the inaugural--got an EF alert set on that!), so I'll be looking to do the same.

Yes, after the schedule update on 10JUL, go back in to reselect your seats.

Confirming... fairly solid confirmation that the walk-up bar is not on the 789.

The schedule change will be interesting when it loads into AA's system. For each route that the 789 starts in November, F shows available again on May 1st, so wondering what route they will service after May 1st.

Just looking at the seat map, it appears they nearly copied AC's 787-9 configuration, well for J/W, so if that helps, look at the AC forum for comments on the 787-9.

It looks very much like the UA config as well, and I looked there a couple of days ago for their active seating discussion. For footwell size, they seemed to like the bulkheads (rows 6 and 1).

Cheers.

Man, they're packing them in on this plane - a plane to avoid for sure unless you can confirm in W or J. With a seat config of 30J/21W/234Y (total 285) compared to UA's 48J/88Y+/116Y (total 252), fewer upgrades to J likely on AA. It will be interesting to see if SWUs go to Y>W and W>J (as being discussed in other threads).

The difference being that the AC aircraft is the actual seat that AA is using, same aircraft, same seat (with the various customizations, needless to say.)
